Villanova Outlasted by No. 6 Creighton

Riley Homer recorded her 1000th career kill; Wildcats return home to host Xavier and DePaul on Friday and Saturday

OMAHA, Neb. – The 'Cats fell to No. 6 Creighton in three sets (10-25, 12-25, 18-25) at DJ Sokol Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Villanova (13-10, 6-6 BIG EAST) was led by Abby Harrell statistically, who recorded nine kills and five digs while Campbell McKinnon tallied five kills and two blocks. Riley Homer was able to total six terminations, her fifth giving her 1000 career kills as a Wildcat.

Taylor Jakubowski and Alyssa Nelson paced the Wildcats with eight and 11 assists respectively. Jakubowski finished the match with a 1.000 hitting percentage and also recorded a termination. Annika Veurink made her first appearance since September 21 against Rhode Island; she totaled two kills and a block.

The first set was taken by the Bluejays 25-10. Harrell had a match high of five kills after the first period, recording a termination on the first play after both timeouts taken in the frame. Nelson helped steady the offense providing assists on five of the 10 tallies for the Wildcats.

The second stanza also ended in the Bluejays' favor at 25-12. VU stayed close until it was 9-8 when Creighton went on a 14 point run. Harrell added two terminations in the period to remain in the match lead after two sets, despite the overall deficit. McKinnon recorded two blocks in the set, one coming with an assist from Taylor Lewis.

In the third frame, the 'Cats went back and forth with Creighton until around the 15 point mark as the Bluejays ultimately pulled away to emerge victorious for the third time with a score of 25-18.

UP NEXT: The 'Cats will be at home for five out of their final six regular season contests, beginning by hosting Xavier and DePaul at Jake Nevin Field House on Friday and Saturday.
