INDIONAPOLIS, Ind. – Villanova (5-6, 1-1) defeated Butler (2-8, 1-1) by a score of 16-11 on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats scored the last seven goals of the contest after trailing 11-9.
Cara Moreau got the Wildcats on the board early followed by goals from
Mary Moore and
Sydney Pappas.
Rose Christie closed out the opening period with a goal as the 'Cats led 4-2. The second period was a shoot out as the sides combined for 10 goals.
Sophia Corretjer netted two goals in the period as Villanova held a 9-7 lead at halftime.
It was all Bulldogs to open the third quarter as Butler scored four unanswered goals. Villanova had to regroup and face adversity on the road, and they did just that as the Wildcats scored the final seven goals of the contest to pull out a big win.
Isabella Francati ended the run and
Sami Carey tied the game at 11 a minute later. Pappas followed that up with three straight goals to seal the game for Villanova.
Pappas has scored five or more goals in a single game eight times in her illustrious career. Carey had two goals and a hat trick of assists for five points as
Rose Christie and
Mary Moore each had three points for the 'Cats.
Emma Verhoest had a team high seven draw controls and
Makenzie Fisher got the win in goal.
Butler was led by Leah Rubino with five goals and an assist. Luci Selander had six points as goalie Caroline Smith recorded 11 saves in the loss.
UP NEXT: The Wildcats are back in action on Wednesday, April 3 when they travel to Storrs to take on UConn. The opening draw is set for one o'clock.
