MILWAUKEE, Wi. -- Villanova (8-5, 2-2) defeated Marquette (4-9, 0-4) by a score of 12-6 on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Wildcats extend their historic streak to 12th consecutive BIG EAST Tournament berths. This year's tournament will be held at Villanova Stadium in two weeks.
Villanova dominated the first quarter and did not look back.
Colin Michener opened the scoring four minutes into the game and
David Link scored his fifth goal of the season to double the lead. On the ensuing faceoff,
Stephen Zupicich scored on a transition attack in thrilling fashion. Villanova led 6-0 early in the second quarter after
Tyler Boes netted his ninth of the year and the 'Cats took a 8-4 lead into halftime.
The Golden Eagles cut the lead to three to open the third and fourth quarters but Villanova snatched momentum with goals from Michener and
Matt Licata.
Dan Martin and
Nicholas Lucchesi scored in the fourth quarter to make the lead 12-6.
Ryan Cunningham was stellar in the faceoff circle yet again as the freshman went 10-16 on faceoffs against one of the top specialists in the nation. Michener, Licata, Martin and Lucchesi each finished with two goals to lead the attack as freshman
Beau Kemler caused two turnovers in his first career start on defense.
Mack Prybylski also earned his first career caused turnover in the win and
Anthony Wilson made six saves in the cage.
Luke Blanc led the Golden Eagles with a goal and an assist. Goalie Caleb Creasor made 13 saves in the loss.
