NEW YORK—Senior thrower
Andrew Grinnell (New Milford, Conn.) earned the first weekly conference honor of his career when he was named the BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week in an announcement by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon. Grinnell is coming off a career best performance in the javelin at the Virginia Challenge last weekend.
In his season debut in Virginia last Friday afternoon, Grinnell looked to be in midseason form as he recorded a personal best mark of 64.85 meters in the javelin. He had two previous performances in his career throwing for over 64 meters, but his longest throw in Friday's competition eclipsed his now-former PR by 16 centimeters. Grinnell already ranked fifth in school history with the old mark of 64.69 meters set as a sophomore in 2022 during the BIG EAST Championships. His performance in Virginia moves him to second place on this year's BIG EAST performance list behind senior teammate
Nick Coffey (Cranston, R.I.) and puts him 39
th in the East region on the season.
Grinnell is a two-time qualifier for the NCAA East Preliminary in the javelin and currently stands in position for a third appearance in the early rounds of the national championships this year. He is next scheduled to compete on Friday afternoon at the Penn Relays, followed by the BIG EAST Championships which will be held at Villanova next month for the second straight year.
This week's action at the Penn Relays gets underway with individual events on Thursday afternoon.
