PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Villanova qualified for the college section final of the 4x400 meter relay after the relay quartet of senior
Nicholas Mollica (Jackson, N.J.), sophomore
Jimmy Milgie (Wildwood, Mo.), freshman
Ethan Walls (Ridgefield, Conn.) and senior
Jakob Kunzer (George Town, Grand Cayman) recorded the third-fastest qualifying time in Friday's heats. Their race closed out a thrilling and busy day of competition for the Wildcats during this weekend's 128
th running of the Penn Relays at Franklin Field.
It was the second-fastest 4x400 race of the outdoor season for Villanova, which posted a time of 3:14.13 to easily move on to the final of its second on Saturday evening at 5:50 p.m. Mollica and Milgie ran the first two legs of the race and were followed by Walls who registered a split of 48.59 on the third leg. It has been a great week for the up-and-comer Walls, who recorded a PR of 49.29 in the 400 meters last Saturday in a meet at Widener and now broke 49 seconds in a relay split for the first time in his career.
Kunzer anchored the relay with a split of 48.34 and sent the Wildcats into a Saturday evening section final which will be the second-to-last collegiate men's race of the weekend at the Penn Relays. Villanova added to its unrivaled legacy at the world's oldest and largest track & field competition earlier on Friday when it won its record 26
th Championship of America title in the distance medley relay.
Other individual events on Friday included heats of the men's 100 meters in addition to college section competition in the long jump and the discus. Sophomore sprinter
Amiri Prescod (Chaguanas, Trinidad and Tobago) recorded a time of 10.70 in the 100 meters and finished fifth in his heat.
The day began with simultaneous competition in the long jump inside Franklin Field and the discus down in the throwing areas at the Irving "Moon" Mondschein Throwing Complex. Junior thrower
Tristan Bolinsky (Gordon, Pa.) recorded a season best performance and the second-longest throw of his career with a mark of 48.70 meters in the discus. All three of Bolinsky's throws were for better than 48 meters and his best mark of the day came on his final attempt. He stood in second place after competition in the first flight had completed and came tantalizingly close to advancing to the final out of that flight.
Senior long jumper
Justin Miller (Colliersville, Tenn.), fresh off rising to ninth place in school history in the long jump last week, recorded a mark of 6.82 meters in Friday's competition. He fouled on his first two attempts before bouncing back on his final jump and finishing in the top half of the field of more than two dozen competitors.
Villanova's event schedule on Saturday includes Championship of America competition beginning with the 4xMile relay at 12:55 p.m., while other events feature the championship section of the javelin at 3:30 p.m. and the college section final of the 4x400 meter relay at 5:50 p.m.
