VILLANOVA, Pa. – One of the oldest sayings in sports is in order to be the best you have to beat the best. That will be the case on Saturday night as in order to claim their first ever BIG EAST Championship, Villanova will have to take down the five-time reigning tournament champions, Georgetown.
Both sides escaped with a one goal win last night as it became the first pair of semifinal games in league history to be decided by one goal apiece.
Luke Raymond's winner with 38 seconds left capped off the upset victory for Villanova and Aidan Carroll's overtime winner held off Providence's upset bid.
First Team All-BIG EAST selections
Matt Licata and
Stephen Zupicich controlled both sides of the field as Licata had three points including the game winning assist and Zupicich caused four turnovers in the win.
Thomas McIntire was crucial to Villanova's success as the Holy Cross transfer put up three points with two goals and an assist.
Carroll was the star of the night, putting up a career-high seven goals with two assists to lead Georgetown. Jack Schubert put up four points as the Hoyas erased a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Villanova has had trouble with Georgetown in recent memory as the Hoyas have taken the last 10 meetings. This marks the first postseason meeting between the sides since the 2022 tournament championship which Georgetown won 14-12.
