VILLANOVA, Pa. – Abby Harrell provided the firepower for Villanova volleyball on Saturday night, tallying a career best 22 kills on a .576 hitting percentage in a sweep (25-21, 25-23, 25-20) of the Princeton Tigers.
"That's the watermark of our season so far, I'm really happy with where we are after tonight," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "Princeton is consistently good year in and year out so this kind of performance is huge for us."
Campbell McKinnon contributed nine kills and reached a career high with five blocks and .538 hitting for Villanova (3-2) as fellow freshman Alyssa Nelson led the match at 24 assists while adding seven digs. Riley Homer (four blocks) and Ozzie Ozonoh (three blocks) each provided a strong force at the net and Cat Young led the team with nine digs and two service aces in addition to six kills.
It was a high energy first frame featuring back-and-forth action and lots of punctuations from each side. The 'Cats totaled 18 kills in the period including eight on a .583 clip from Harrell, taking a 14-13 lead and never looking back en route to a 25-21 victory.
Villanova got out to a hot start in the second with a 5-1 run to force a Princeton timeout, but the Tigers climbed back in to lead by two. The Wildcats strung some together and moved to a 19-15 advantage thanks to four blocks in the stanza and despite the visitors pulling even at 23, back-to-back Harrell terminations ended the second in favor of the home side.
VU took another early edge with a 6-2 beginning to the third and kept up that momentum, leading by as many as seven at 19-12 and withstanding a late Princeton run for the second straight set victory in as many days.
The win moves the series to even with Villanova's victory pulling it to 6-6 all-time against the Tigers.
