Final Score: Georgetown 64, Villanova 63
Â
Overview
Â
Georgetown scored the game's final nine points, including the game-winner by Micah Peavy with just under two seconds left, to edge Villanova 64-63 on Monday night at Finneran Pavilion.
Â
A well-run final play with 1.8 seconds on the clock, sent a pass the length of the court into the waiting arms of
Eric Dixon. Dixon launched a turn-around 12-footer that bounced off the rim as the final horn sounded.
Â
"A lot of the credit goes to Georgetown," said Villanova head coach
Kyle Neptune. "I thought our guys battled. Georgetown stuck in there the entire game and locked us up in the final few minutes. We just didn't have enough in the end."
Â
Dixon led Villanova with 29 points while
Jordan Longino added 18 points. But the rest of the Wildcats were mostly held in check by the Hoyas, who got 24 points from Peavy and 15 points from Jayden Epps.
Â
Boards Were Big
Â
Georgetown collected five of the game's first seven rebounds, allowing it to craft a 5-3 lead over the Wildcats through 4:10 of game action. The Wildcats got a 3-pointer from
Wooga Poplar on the game's first possession but endured a scouring drought of four minutes but an
Eric Dixon step-back 3-pointer off an inbounds play ended the stretch and the 'Cats on top, 6-5.
Â
A 7-0 run fueled by a 3-pointer by Dixon and dunk by
Enoch Boakye, pushed Villanova to a 13-7 lead. But
Jhamir Brickus was whistled for his second foul moments later and Poplar picked up a technical foul after a skirmish and was ejected from the game. The Hoyas' Thomas Sorber was also hit with a technical foul.
Â
By night's end, Villanova would own a 41-30 edge on the glass, with Boakye pulling down a dozen caroms.
Â
Longino Lent a Hand
Â
With Poplar out for the remainder of this one and Brickus having picked up two fouls, the Wildcats' third guard in their starting lineup, Longino, came through in a big way. In addition to sticky defense, the Doylestown, Pa., native supplied 11 points to complement the 16 points over the first 20 minutes from Dixon.
Â
Most of that production came against a zone defense employed by the Hoyas.
Â
Villanova took a 34-27 lead into the locker room.
Â
Peavy scored 11 points to lead Georgetown, while Sorber, the Hoyas' standout freshman, contributed nine points.
Â
The Wildcats limited Georgetown to 8-of-26 shooting over the first 20 minutes (.308) and, after the early deficit, held a 22-16 advantage on the glass.
Â
Second Act
Â
A Brickus 3-pointer got Villanova off on the right foot to start the second period and the Wildcats scored eight of the first 13 points in the period.
Â
A 6-0 surge by Georgetown, fueled by guard Jayden Epps, shave the Villanova lead to 46-41 with 12:14 to play in the second half. Full court pressure from the Hoyas disrupted the Wildcats, leading to a pair of turnovers.
Â
Dixon and Longino helped VU push its advantage to 53-44 but the Hoyas sank three straight form beyond on the arc, including a pair in the corner by Peavy, and the lead was 59-53 with 6:10 on the clock.
Â
Hoyas' Heat Took a Toll
Â
The Hoyas forced 16 Wildcats turnovers on the night, including three in the final 4:52.
Â
"The turnovers hurt us," Neptune said. "They forced us into some tough situations and were very physical."
Â
Georgetown trailed 63-62 when it regained possession of the basketball after Dixon misfired on a turnaround jumper with 26 seconds remaining. A pair of intentional VU fouls – the Wildcats had two to give - gave the Hoyas possession with 12.8 seconds left and the 6,501 in Finneran Pavilion on its feet. Peavy drove the ball towards the goal and was able to finish to give Georgetown its first lead since early in the contest.
Â
What They Said
Â
Neptune: "On the last play, I thought we did a good job. Peavy made a tough shot. He went to his weak side. I thought he got a little separation with a jab. I know people don't look at it like we do, but there were 200 minutes total for each player. There's a lot of little details throughout the game that can change the outcome. Just one thing can make the difference."
