VILLANOVA, Pa.—Eight different players scored a touchdown, including four who found the end zone for the first time in their careers, and No. 15 Villanova (5-2, 4-1 CAA Football) extended its record home winning streak to 19 games with a 56-14 romp over Hampton (2-6, 0-4 CAA Football) at Villanova Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Back at home for the first time in three weeks, the Wildcats steamrolled to a 49-0 halftime lead and won their fourth straight game overall.
Fifth year quarterback
Pat McQuaide (Solon, Ohio) threw for a career high five touchdowns on just 13 pass attempts in the first half. He finished 10-of-13 for 166 yards and the five scores, including a 65-yard strike to sophomore wide receiver
Chris Colby (Rowley, Mass.) which had Villanova in front by a 14-0 margin just over eight minutes into the game. McQuaide himself opened the scoring at the 9:06 mark of the first quarter with a one-yard touchdown run to cap off a 10-play scoring drive on the game's first possession.
The superlatives for the Wildcats included a season high 78 players seeing time on the field, with 32 players being credited with one or more tackles. Graduate wide receivers
Lucas Kopecky (Rocky Hill, N.J.) and
Luke Colella (Wexford, Pa.) each caught touchdown passes in a span of just over three minutes spanning the end of the first and start of the second quarters. Colella's grab for 34 yards was his third score in the last two games and pushed the margin to 28-0 with 13:20 to go in the second quarter.
Not all the scoring came from the offense. Fifth year defensive tackle
Obinna Nwobodo (Wilmington, Del.) returned a Pirates fumble 53 yards for a touchdown at the 10:48 mark of the second period. It was the first time since 2017 that a Villanova defensive player returned a fumble for a score.
Rob Rolle was the last to do it with a 99-yard return against Maine on October 7, 2017. The last defensive touchdown for the Wildcats before Saturday's contest was in last year's regular season finale when
Brendan Bell had a pick-six against Delaware.
Nwobodo's second career forced fumble, first recovery and first career touchdown made possible an unlikely halftime stat. Villanova went into the half with a seven-touchdown lead despite having just six of its own possessions in the first 30 minutes. Touchdown passes from McQuaide to senior tight end
Antonio Johnson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and redshirt freshman tight end
Sean Brodnik (Ardmore, Pa.) before the end of the second quarter extended the margin to 49-0.
Senior running back
Eli Smith (Houston, Texas) scored his first career touchdown on a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter for the Wildcats only second half points. Earlier in the game, sophomore running back
David Avit (Frederick, Md.) became the 25
th player in school history to reach 1,500 career rushing yards. He began the day 42 yards away from the milestone and had eight carries for 52 yards in the first half. Six different Villanova running backs combined for an average of 5.7 yards per carry, with their totals adding up to 27 carries for 155 yards.
Backup quarterback
Tanner Maddocks (Reading, Pa.) played the second half under center and was the Wildcats leading rusher for the day with 67 yards on five carries. He was 2-of-3 through the air for nine yards. Redshirt freshman defensive end
Ugo Nwotite (Linwood, N.J.) had a career high 2.5 tackles for loss and Villanova had 10 TFL in the game. Redshirt freshman defensive lineman
AJ Koukou (Havertown, Pa.) and junior safety
Josh Oluremi (Avenel, N.J.) each had a sack.
The win extended numerous streaks that have been notable for the Wildcats in recent weeks, and years. Villanova has now won 19 straight home games dating back to the middle of the 2022 season. It is a program record for longest home winning streak and the second longest active FCS home winning streak behind South Dakota State which has won 33 straight at home.
This week marked the fourth straight game that the Wildcats did not commit a turnover. Based on immediately available data after the game, it has been at least 20 years and potentially much longer since Villanova had a four game streak without a turnover. The offense also had eight different receivers catch a pass in Saturday's win. There have been at least seven different receivers for the Wildcats in all seven games played this season.
Maybe most importantly for Villanova as the season schedule moves into its second half: Saturday kicked off a stretch of playing at home in four of the final five games of the regular season. Next up is Homecoming for the Wildcats, who host UAlbany next Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
