WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Villanova field hockey team fell 3-0 in Washington, D.C. against American University on Sunday afternoon.
American was able to control much of the opening frame. The Eagles drew four corners and had seven shots, six on goal, in the first 15 minutes of the game. AU finally converted and put one in the back of the cage to score the first goal of the game.
The second period was more even, with both teams tallying two shots. Both of Villanova's shots were on goal, but the 'Cats were unable to get one to go. American was able to extend their lead around halfway in the second to take a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
The second half was much the same. Both teams took turns controlling possession and neither team was able to control the ball for much time. American drew one corner in the third and were able to convert on that corner after freshman
Sophie Volkel was able to deflect the first two shots. Early in the fourth, the 'Cats decided to pull their goalie to have an extra attacker. Due to that VU controlled most of the possession in the final frame but were unable to put one in the back of the cage.
