PONCE, P.R. – The Villanova University baseball team fell to Michigan, 19-0, on Sunday (Feb. 16) at Francisco Montaner Stadium in the Wildcats' final game of the Puerto Rico Challenge.
The Wolverines (3-0) tallied five runs on six hits throughout the first two innings. Relief pitcher
Jake Francis held Michigan in check in the third inning and finished the game with only two hits and one run allowed through 2.1 innings.
After U-M tacked on five more runs in the fourth and fifth innings, freshman
Ben Pew set the Wolverines down in order in the sixth. Pew only allowed two hits and one run through two full innings of work, recording his first career strikeout in the process.
Michigan added nine more runs through the seventh and eighth innings.
Graham Moore closed the game out for the Wildcats (1-2), allowing only three hits and no runs while posting three strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
The Villanova offense struggled throughout the game to create opportunities.
Tyler Shaw and
Austin Lemon each recorded hits for the third straight game to start the season. Shaw and Lemon's on-base percentages improved to .667 and .571, respectively.
