Kobryn Deals as Villanova Closes Out Joan Joyce Classic With 3-0 Win

Wildcats defeat Dartmouth behind two-hit shutout from freshman right-hander

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lexi Kobryn delivered another lockdown performance in the circle for Villanova softball on Sunday, allowing just three baserunners in a two-hit complete game shutout and 3-0 victory over Dartmouth.

The victory moved the freshman right-hander to 3-0 on the season with a pair of shutout wins at the Joan Joyce Classic, striking out four batters in each of her starts in Boca Raton.

Ava Franz, Maranda Runco and Grace Reed provided all the scoring the 'Cats needed with Franz going yard for the second time this weekend, Runco recording an RBI double and Reed scoring once and reaching base twice on a pair of walks.

Kobryn started out the contest strong, coming through with a strikeout in each of the first two stanzas and keeping the Big Green off the board.

Reed drew a leadoff walk to open the home half of the second, moving station to station on another walk and a groundout before crossing the plate on a wild pitch for a 1-0 Wildcat edge after two.

Franz kept up her strong weekend in the third frame, blasting a home run off the palm trees in left field to put her team ahead 2-0. A hit-by-pitch of Kelsey White followed before Runco belted a pitch into the gap for a double, scoring White all the way from first for a 3-0 lead.

Already dealing in the circle, Kobryn also recorded her first collegiate hit when she laced a one-hop double off the wall in the fourth but couldn't reach the plate to add to the tally.

Kendall Spivey and Jaclyn Morra each came through with pinch-hit base knocks in VU's sixth-inning chances, though neither could get past second to keep the lead at three and it was up to the New Jersey native in the circle to close out the win.

Kobryn came back out looking for the shutout and delivered just as she had all day, working out of a one-out error to stifle the Big Green and deliver a three-win Wildcat weekend with a 3-0 victory.

UP NEXT: Villanova heads to ACC country next weekend, taking part in the Clemson Classic at McWhorter Stadium. The Wildcats will take on the host Tigers on Friday before facing Elon and Marshall Saturday, then closing out the trip to South Carolina on Sunday in either the tournament's championship or consolation game.
