VILLANOVA, Pa. – Men's Golf continues their spring season by taking on their first invitational tournament at The People's Championship at Sea Palms Golf Resort in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
The 2016-17 and 2017-18 teams both played one-day events at Sea Palm's hosted by Coastal Georgia. But this will be the Wildcat's first time taking part in this event.
The field consists of 20 teams, including Villanova, a fellow Big 5 team in Drexel, and another BIG EAST foe in Xavier. The other 17 include Belmont, Charleston Southern, Davidson, Florida A&M, Francis Marion, Long Island, Marshall, Mount St. Mary's, Murray State, Richmond, Siena, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee-Martin, UNC Greensboro, Winthrop, and Wright State.
The format will be 5 count 4, as well as stroke play. Each golfer will play a round of 18 each day over the course of three days for 54 total holes.
All teams are bringing a starting five, along with an individual.
Villanova will be paired up with Tennessee Tech and Murray State. They will tee off starting at 1:20 P.M. on Thursday, March 13, in 10-minute intervals. Their individual,
Joshua Lavely, will tee off at 1:10 P.M., alongside Mount St. Mary's and Florida A&M.
THE LINEUP (LISTED IN 1-5 ORDER)
2:00 P.M. –
Ryan Pamer had a strong showing in Florida to open the season. Despite going 1-2, he played against some of the best competition in the conference and played them close. Pamer shot one over on par four holes, tying him for fifth, and six under on par fives, placing third among all competitors. He was also able to fall into the top 10, shooting 11 birdies, tying for sixth.
1:50 P.M. – Matthew Zerfass will slot in at the second spot in The People's Championship. He finished up his time at BIG EAST Match Play, gaining the lead on the opening hole and never relinquishing it, holding a lead as high as 4Up at the turn. The junior birdied his third-to-last hole and shot par on six of his final seven to maintain his lead on the front nine.
1:40 P.M. -
Vibhav Alokam shot either par or birdied his final 11 holes, helping fend off his opposition on his final day in Florida. Traveling back down to the warm weather, where 70 and sunny weather is projected every day for the tournament, the Michigan native may look to use the chance to play in the warmth in March to his advantage again. Through six fall tournaments, the freshman broke onto the scene, shooting a 74.9 average round.
1:30 P.M. -
Gus Vickers played very well in the Sunshine State in February, shooting 74 and 72 through 17 holes before his round was called due to defeat. In his final round, he was the one that closed up shop on hole 16, shooting a 62 through those holes and defeating his DePaul opponent. Vickers won his match 4&2, while birdying five holes and shooting par across the back nine and carding 26 (-3) across the front nine until his win was declared.
1:20 P.M. -
Ian Love is making his first appearance since the Georgetown Intercollegiate, when he finished 59th. In the Doc Gimmler, back in September, he shot a low round of 73 on day one and finished fourth of six VU golfers on Bethpage Black, one of the hardest courses in the United States.
1:10 P.M. -
Joshua Lavely will round out the lineup for the Wildcats and compete as an individual. He had an impressive showing at BIG EAST Match Play, going 2-0-1.
