BALTIMORE – The Villanova University men's tennis team claimed its first road win of the season, defeating Loyola (Md.), 5-2, on Tuesday afternoon (March 18) at the McClure Tennis Center.
In doubles,
Trey Fourticq and
Cooper Gordon earned an emphatic 6-2 victory over Ryan Bolan and Cristian Pemueller.
Thomas Wakefield and
Kush Anand needed an extra game to take down George Cavo and Harry Zeiders, 7-5, which secured the doubles point for the Wildcats.
Will Monahan and
Justin Frattarelli led Noah Castillo and Ryan Gil, 6-5, when their match went unfinished.
Villanova's top three flights dominated on the singles card, with Gordon, Fourticq and Monahan all winning in straight sets to secure the win for the Wildcats. Wakefield fell to Gil in a third-set tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-4, 10-5. Anand defeated Blake Edwards in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. At the bottom of the card, freshman
Cameron Kruep dropped a heartbreaker to Pemueller. After losing the first set, 6-3, Kruep fought back and won the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (5). The third set needed several extra points to be decided, with Kruep falling 14-12 in a set to 10.
Up next, Villanova will travel to the Midwest to face DePaul on Friday (March 21) at Lakeshore Sports and Fitness. The match is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. ET (8 p.m. CT).
