Villanova Wraps Up Non-Conference Tournaments With Loss to Penn State

Ava Franz hits a solo home run and Brooklyn Ostrowski reaches base three times for the 'Cats

SALEM, Va. – The Villanova Wildcats finished out their non-conference tournament slate on Sunday afternoon, suffering a 6-1 loss to Penn State at the Moyer Sports Complex in the finale of the Hokie Invite.

Ava Franz and Brooklyn Ostrowski led the way offensively for Villanova (7-11), Ostrowski reaching three times on a walk and pair of singles while Franz notched a home run and a double. Maddie Burrows walked twice to be the only other Wildcat aboard the basepaths on the day.

Kat Gallant threw a complete game in the circle, striking out a season-high seven while surrendering five earned runs on the afternoon.

Gallant worked through a pair of one-out singles in the first, retired the Nittany Lions 1-2-3 in the second and escaped a two-out double in the third to give her lineup a chance to score first.

The 'Cats got their first runner aboard to begin the second as Ostrowski singled into left field, but frame two ended scoreless.

Franz changed that with two down in the third, belting a pitch over the fence in left center for a solo shot and 1-0 Wildcat lead after three.

Penn State answered with a solo homer of their own in the fourth, then broke the tie with another in the following inning. The Nittany Lions expanded that lead in the seventh with four hits and a pair of errors allowing a 6-1 advantage.

The 'Cats put multiple pitches in play but couldn't get anyone aboard in their final hacks, allowing the all-time series with PSU to revert back to even.
