Villanova Heads South to Take On Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Villanova University baseball team will hit the road for a three-game series with Wofford over the weekend (March 21-23) at Russell C. King Field.
 
QUICK HITTERS
  • The Wildcats will head to Spartanburg, S.C., for a three-game weekend series with 2024 Southern Conference champion Wofford.
  • Villanova is 0-3 all-time against Wofford. The Terriers swept a three-game series in 2017 at Villanova Ballpark.
  • South Carolina native Bobby Olsen leads the team in strikeouts, ranking in the top 40 nationally with 36. He had 9 against NJIT on Friday, earning BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.

Junior third baseman Michael Whooley is currently on an eight-game hitting streak dating back to March 5. Over that span, the junior third baseman is hitting .314 with seven runs scored an four RBI. He also has two doubles and a triple during the hot streak.
 
FRESHMAN PHENOMS
Multiple freshmen led the way for the Wildcats in Sunday's 10-3 win over NJIT (March 16). Outfielder JoJo Montgomery celebrated his birthday by going 4-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases. He is now tied with Aidan Barry for a team-high total of six swiped bags on the season. Meanwhile, first-year second baseman Brayden Leonard hit his first career grand slam in the bottom of the third inning to break open a tie game and give Villanova a 5-1 lead. Leonard went 2-for-4 with a double later in the afternoon and is now tied for second-most RBI on the team with 15.
 
OUTSTANDING OLSEN
Bobby Olsen leads the Wildcats with a 2.73 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He's currently tied for 40th in strikeouts among all Division-I pitchers with 36. Opponents are hitting a mere .205 against the Powdersville, S.C. native.
 
WOFFORD AT A GLANCE
The Terriers enter this weekend's series at 15-7 after splitting a pair of midweek games, defeating UNC Asheville, 5-2, on the road and falling to USC Upstate at a neutral site in Greenville, S.C. Wofford is led by a tenacious offense, hitting .293 on the season and averaging 6.43 runs per nine innings. Five regular starters for the Terriers have a batting average over .300. On the mound, Champ Davis leads the team in ERA (1.27) and WHIP (0.92) out of the bullpen.
 
The first of three games will be played on Friday (March 21) and will begin at 5:30 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
