Wildcats Fall in Midweek Matchup at Delaware

Villanova will travel to Indianapolis for three-game set at Butler from April 17-19

NEWARK, Del. – Villanova softball suffered a defeat in this week's Tuesday bout, falling to the Delaware Blue Hens 12-2 in six innings at the Delaware Softball Diamond.

Five different players notched a hit for Villanova (22-18-1) with Maranda Runco being the lone VU player to reach twice (single and hit by pitch) and Brooklyn Ostrowski providing the two RBI on a first-inning triple while Ava Franz and Elaina Wagner each scored in the ballgame.

Lexi Kobryn received the loss in three innings with six runs allowed on a pair of strikeouts and Kat Gallant went two frames in the circle for the Wildcats, also surrendering six runs.

Runco got hit by a pitch in the first inning to give Villanova an opening baserunner, then Franz replaced her on a fielder's choice grounder and Wagner reached on an error to make it two aboard. After the 'Cats got out of a rundown to extend the inning, B. Ostrowski lined a pitch all the way to the wall in right field to score both runners and get her side up 2-0 after one.

Following a scoreless second for both sides, the Blue Hens put together a monster inning in the third, getting five hits and taking advantage of three free passes in a six-run frame for a 6-2 edge.

Grace Reed and Madison Ostrowski each singled in the fourth and an error made it bases juiced, but Delaware got the outs necessary to keep the Wildcats from striking back.

UD added to that advantage in the fifth with a run on a pair of hits, then ended the contest in the sixth with a five-run inning for a 12-2 final.

UP NEXT: The 'Cats now head to Indianapolis, taking part in a pivotal BIG EAST series this week against the Butler Bulldogs from Apr. 17-19.
