NEW YORK—Villanova led all BIG EAST schools with a program record 395 selections to the 2024-25 All-Academic Team which was announced by the conference office on Monday morning. It is the third time in the last six years that Villanova Athletics has set a new record for its most selections to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team, and it is the 10th straight year in which more than 300 Wildcats student-athletes have garnered All-Academic recognition.
Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the BIG EAST's 11 member schools and six affiliate institutions. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters of three consecutive quarters of academic work with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
There are 3,123 honorees on the BIG EAST All-Academic Team for the 2024-25 academic year. The total number of honorees topped 3,100 for the second straight year. Georgetown was second to Villanova with 365 selections to the All-Academic Team, followed by Connecticut (285) and Providence (275).
Monday's release was the latest in a series of BIG EAST academic honors which are being announced this summer. Last week the Wildcats women's swimming & diving and golf programs were recognized with BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Awards for the highest GPA in the conference within their sport. Meanwhile, student-athletes Roschell Clayton (indoor track & Field) and Katie White (women's swimming & diving) were chosen as winners of Sport Excellence Awards for their combination of athletic and academic excellence.
The dedication that Villanova student-athletes show to their academic pursuits has been well-recognized. In May, the Wildcats had 14 of its varsity programs earn public recognition for having a multiyear APR score which ranks in the top 10 percent of their sport nationwide. The public recognition awards included 13 teams who had a perfect multiyear score of 1000, making it eight consecutive years that the Wildcats have had 10 or more teams earn a perfect score.
There are just 10 Division I athletic departments nationwide – and seven schools outside the Ivy League – with at least 14 sport programs earning public recognition awards in the latest data. Villanova led all BIG EAST institutions with both the most public recognition awards and the most teams with a perfect 1000 score.
In June, Villanova Athletics announced its academic data for the Spring 2025 semester, with student-athletes posting a 3.495 GPA for the most recent marking period. It marked the 15th straight semester in which the GPA for Wildcats student-athletes has topped 3.3. There were 73 student-athletes from 18 sports who had a semester GPA of 4.0, while 78 percent of student-athletes were named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for having a GPA of 3.2 or higher.
