PRINCETON, N.J. – Villanova saw its four-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday night, falling to Princeton 1-0 at Roberts Stadium.
The 60
th minute penalty kick was the first goal Villanova (4-3) had allowed in 462:40 minutes of play since August 21. The 'Cats held Princeton (1-2-3) scoreless until the 59:14 mark and could not get an answer down the stretch.
"It was a fantastic performance by the team tonight," head coach
Samar Azem said. "There were so many moments where we made it really difficult for Princeton to do what it wanted to do. There were a lot of ebbs and flows in the game; momentum shifted, I would say. Kate (Dobsch) had a fantastic tackle in the box, just the situation was unfortunate, and things are going to happen."
Villanova was outshot 18-10 in the defeat, led by a four-shot performance from
Amalia Cardo to match her career high for attempts. In net,
Hannah Dickinson made five saves, one away from tying her season high.
The Tigers had a pair of chances around the 27-minute mark that Dickinson shut down. Drew Coomans set a shot from just above the 18-yard box that Dickinson saved in a diving attempt near the post. On the following corner kick, the senior keeper punched the ball above a crowd near the mouth of the goal to keep the game scoreless.
Morgan Kotch had Villanova's first shot on goal in the contest in the 30
th minute. She throttled a chance from inside the 18-yard box that was gathered by Princeton goalie Cecilia Cerone.
In the 39
th minute, Princeton had a dangerous setup deep inside the box. Ally Murphy sneaked past a couple Nova defenders but sent a shot right at Dickinson for the save.
Villanova's closest attempt came in the waning moments of the first half when
Amalia Cardo took a shot that glanced just wide of the right post, leaving it 0-0 at the break.
The Tigers held a 9-7 shot advantage through the opening 45, 4-2 for shots on frame.
Princeton's goal came in the 60
th minute when a penalty was whistled against
Kate Dobsch in the box. Ally Murphy lined up for the chance and sent it into the bottom left corner, putting the Tigers up 1-0.
Murphy went on to lead Princeton with four shot attempts, two on frame.
"I thought the team started that half with a lot of momentum, that was a knock and it took us maybe a couple minutes to get back into it," Azem said. "As we got back into it, close to the middle of the half, I felt like we really had the edge there. I think we did enough today though to, to be fair, walk away with a tie and that's not good enough for us. If we had tied, that would not be good enough for us."
Princeton had a close chance to extend its lead in the 84
th minute when Dylan Jovanovic hit a shot that bounced off the left post. Villanova's best chance for scoring came around that time too with
Gabby Koluch sending a cross inside that Sydney Romano jumped on.
Villanova closes nonconference action on Sunday with a trip to Penn. Kickoff from Philadelphia is set for 6 p.m.
