BOSTON, Mass.—Senior distance runner
Marco Langon (Raritan, N.J.) once again owns a piece of history after he broke the Villanova record in the 3000 meters at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon. He competed against a nearly completely professional field of athletes and was clocked in 7:34.56 for a PR of better than two seconds. He is now the Wildcats record holder in both the 3K and the 5K (13:05.21) with times that have been set this indoor season.
Langon's time of 7:34.56 ranks No. 4 on the all-time NCAA list and is the fifth-fastest all-seasons time ever recorded by a collegiate runner. At the start of the day, he was already No. 2 in the Villanova record book and No. 13 in NCAA history in the 3000 meters with a time of 7:36.87 recorded last season. His now former PR was set in the same race where
Liam Murphy recorded a school record time of 7:35.47 which Langon eclipsed Saturday at the Grand Prix meet. He is ranked 61
st in the indoor 3000 meters in world history and his time on Saturday checks in at No. 115 on the list of fastest indoor 3K races the world has ever seen.
Runners from the United States, Ireland, Australia, Netherlands and Great Britain made up the field of 13 world-class athletes who started Saturday's race. Langon had work to do after being pushed to near the back of the back at the start. He was still in seventh place with three laps to go before passing American athlete Morgan Beadlescomb and Dutch runner Abdi Ali Mahadi with two laps and 400 meters remaining. Langon held his position in fifth place all the way to the finish line.
After redshirting the collegiate cross country season this past Fall, Langon has set records in each of his first two races of the indoor track & field campaign. The first record-setting performance was his mark of 13:05.21 in the 5000 meters at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center on December 6. Saturday's Grand Prix was contested nearby on the surface at the TRACK at new balance.
Langon's collegiate body work includes his two school records along with PRs of 3:54.60 in the mile and 3:33.38 in the 1500 meters. He is a six-time All-American during his Wildcats career. During the 2024-25 cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field seasons, he became the ninth men's athlete in school history to be an All-American in all three of those seasons in the same academic year.
