New for the 2025-26 academic year, Villanova will announce its top performers from the previous week in a press release and social media post each Monday afternoon. The weekly wrap will recognize one standout student-athlete from each sport who competed during the previous week.

VILLANOVA, Pa.—The crossover between Winter and Spring sports is in full swing and nine sports were in action during the week of February 2-8, including season openers in softball and men's lacrosse as well as big wins for both the men's and women's basketball teams. Nine student-athletes from the teams in competition make up the latest edition of the Villanova Athletics Weekly Wrap sponsored by Zajac and Padilla.

Men's Basketball
Malachi Palmer
Sophomore, Guard, Harrisburg, Pa.

Palmer played a big role in the Wildcats wins over Seton Hall and Georgetown last week. He had season highs of 15 points and six rebounds on 5-of-7 shooting in a home win over the Pirates, then backed up that performance with 10 points in 22 minutes in a road win over the Hoyas. The week wrapped up a seven-game span in which Palmer averaged 21 minutes per game off the bench and shot 59 percent (19-of-32) from the floor while averaging 8.3 points per game.

Women's Basketball
Jasmine Bascoe
Sophomore, Guard, Milton, Ont.

Bascoe averaged 23.0 points per game in a pair of BIG EAST victories over Butler and Georgetown last week. She began the week with 27 points and five assists on the road against the Bulldogs, marking the second straight game that she matched her conference season high with 27 points scored. Villanova gutted out a home win over Georgetown over the weekend in which Bascoe chipped in with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Martin scored a game-tying goal late in regulation and the golden game-winner in overtime as Villanova knocked off No. 7 Penn State, 14-13, in its 2026 season opener. Playing on the road, the Wildcats overcame their largest deficit of the game – 12-9 – with 6:29 left in regulation to knot he score on Martin's first goal of the season with 3:32 to play. The teams traded goals in the final three minutes of regulation before Martin netted the game-winner with exactly three minutes left on the overtime clock.

Madison Ostrowski

Villanova opened the season at the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech last weekend and Ostrowski led the team with four hits, including two doubles, in the Wildcats first set of games. She started all six games during the tournament as Villanova squared off twice each against nationally-ranked and 2025 NCAA Super Regional participant Alabama, host Georgia Tech and East Carolina.

Ethan Carr
Junior, Birmingham, Ala.

Villanova evened its Spring record with a pair of wins over Howard and Wagner last week. Carr was a key player in both victories, beginning in a 5-2 team win over Howard in which he scored wins in both singles and doubles. He teamed with
Cooper Gordon for a 6-2 win at the No. 1 doubles position and later rallied for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles. In an even closer 4-3 team decision against Wagner the next day the Wildcats rallied after losing the doubles point to win four singles matches, including Cooper's dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 spot.

Villanova swept a pair of road matches against Seton Hall and Lehigh last week, winning the matches by team scores of 4-3 and 5-2. Stevens was a winner in straight sets against both opponents, including a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles versus the Pirates and a dominant 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 5 singles to close out the weekend against the Mountain Hawks.

Hedgemon cracked the top 10 in Villanova history in the weight throw in his best outing of the season at the Penn Classic last weekend. He threw 16.43 meters to surge into seventh place on the Wildcats all-time performance list while also moving into the top eight of this season's BIG EAST performance list for the first time. His performance was the first time he surpassed 16 meters this season and elevated him to No. 7 on the BIG EAST list.

Women's Indoor Track & Field
Lizzie Martell
Graduate Student, Middle Distance, Essex Junction, Vt.

Martell recorded a lifetime best of 2:03.58 in the 800 meters at the Penn Classic and impacted both the Villanova record book and this year's national descending order list with her performance. Her race is the sixth-fastest indoor 800 meters in school history and moves Martell up to No. 9 on the Wildcats all-time performance list, including third indoors, in the 800 meters. She moved into 15
th place on this season's Division I performance list at the time of the race and was No. 18 on that list at the end of the weekend. The top 16 declared athletes in each individual event qualify for the NCAA Championships next month.

Ella Mattocks

Villanova hosted the Wildcat Invite this weekend and split four matches during the tournament, including a 20-3 win over Gannon and a 17-10 victory over Iona. Mattocks scored five times in the win over Gannon, including two goals in the second quarter to help the Wildcats build a 13-3 halftime lead. She also had two first half goals against Iona to help secure a Villanova win in a matchup of teams who were each receiving votes in the CWPA national poll.
