MIAMI, Fla. – The Villanova University baseball team fell to FIU, 4-3, on the road, closing out the three-game series.
PITCHERS DUEL EARLY
Unlike the first two games of the series, both offenses were quiet to start. Neither team scored until the fourth inning, when each crossed a run across the plate.
Graduate student
Carsten Finnvold made an impressive Wildcat debut, striking out three batters over three innings. Senior
Graham Moore entered in the fourth to get Villanova out of a jam, allowing just one run in the inning, which was charged to Finnvold.
TIGHT BATTLE
The game remained close throughout, with each team answering whenever the other scored. In the fourth, senior
Aidan Barry singled to left field, sending
Brayden Leonard home and giving Villanova a brief lead. The Panthers responded in their half of the inning to even the score.
Senior
Collin Quintano blasted a homer to left in the seventh to put the Wildcats back on top—his second straight game with a home run. FIU answered again with a two-run homer to take their first lead of the afternoon.
Entering the ninth, FIU held a slim advantage. Senior
Michael Whooley came through with a clutch at-bat, sending
Mark Gialluisi home to tie the game. Although the play was ruled an error on Whooley, it tied the contest and forced extra drama. FIU eventually loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and secured a walk-off victory with a sacrifice fly by Doeschot, earning the series win.
COLLIN QUINTANO
Despite the loss,
Collin Quintano made an impact in his lone at-bat, launching a late homer to give Villanova the lead. It marked his second consecutive game with a homer after going deep in Friday's opener.
