CHARLOTESVILLE, Va. — The Villanova softball team split its games at the UVA Party at Palmer Classic Saturday.
VU (2-17) started the day with its biggest win of the season, a 17-1 rout of Bucknell in five innings which saw the team put up its season-high run total.
The 17 runs were the most the 'Cats have scored since a 17-7 win over Providence on March 17, 2024.
Kat Gallant (W, 1-6) picked up her first win of the season, pitching four innings, striking out five and giving up two runs on four hits.
Villanova struck for two runs in the first inning on a
Maranda Runco RBI double and
Lilly St. Jean RBI single.
In their biggest inning of the season, the 'Cats scored eight runs in the second inning.
The rally started with a
Maddie Burrows two-run double and was followed by a two-run home run by
Lexi Kobryn, the first of her career.
Jacquelyn Cox then hit an RBI infield single, the first run batted in of her career.
Madison Ostrowski rounded out the inning with a bases clearing double to make it 10-0.
Bucknell struck for two runs in the second to bring the score down to 10-2.
Katie Reed added to the 'Cats tally in the third with a solo home run, the third of the season for the freshman. Reed now leads the team in home runs.
The fourth inning saw Kobryn pick up two more RBIs with a single through the left side before
Carly Zych hit an RBI single to make it 14-2.
Jaclyn Morra hit a two-run double in the fourth to make it a 16-2 contest.
Maranda Runco rounded out the scoring in the contest, walking in a run with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth before pitching the final inning in relief to close the game out.
In the late afternoon game, Villanova fell 10-2 to Virginia in five innings.
Sophia Mount (L, 0-1) got the start in the circle for the 'Cats, pitching 2/3 innings, walking six and giving up three runs on no hits.
Maggie King pitched the majority of the game for Villanova, going 3 2/3, striking out two, walking two and giving up six earned runs on six hits.
The Cavaliers struck three times in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.
VU responded in the third on a pair of RBI doubles by Kobryn and St. Jean, respectably.
Virginia extended its lead back to three in the bottom of the third, taking a 5-2 lead.
The Cavaliers scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth to close out the contest.
Kobryn went 3-4 at the plate on the day with a home run, a double and five RBIs. The sophomore is third on the team with seven RBIs, all of which have come in the last three games.
