VILLANOVA, PA. – The Villanova Wildcats welcomed he Georgetown Hoyas to the Finneran Pavilion on Saturday afternoon where the home team tallied a 67-55 win.
With the victory, Villanova improves to 19-5 overall and 12-3 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown falls to 12-12 on the year and 5-10 in league action.
Villanova started fast connecting on five of its first eight shots and racing to a 12-4 lead. Four different players accounted for the 12 points with
Denae Carter leading the way with four of the 12.
The Wildcats would control play throughout the period and lead 19-12 after one quarter. Villanova held the Hoyas to just 28.6 percent shooting in the opening 10 minutes. The Wildcats were 8-of-19 from the floor, including a 3-of-6 effort from three.
Villanova led 26-17 midway through the second quarter, when Georgetown used a 7-2 spurt to make it a 28-24 game. Summer Davis highlighted the stretch for the Hoyas with four points.
Jasmine Bascoe closed out the first half scoring with two free throws with three seconds on the clock. The Bascoe points sent the teams to halftime with Villanova leading 30-24.
Georgetown used an 8-0 run to slice a nine-point lead to 40-39 with 1:38 to play in the third quarter. Khia Miller had four of the eight points for the Hoyas. Villanova responded by scoring the last five points of the period to take a 45-39 advantage after three.
Brynn McCurry buried a three-ball and Bascoe added two free throws.
Villanova put the game away midway through the fourth quarter with a decisive 15-2 run to open-up a commanding 63-46 advantage at the 4:51 mark. Back-to-back three-point field goals by
Kennedy Henry and triple from the corner from
Kelsey Joens led the way in the spurt.
Bascoe led all scorers in the win with 19 points, while
Denae Carter had 11 points and six assists. Henry and Joens had 10 points each.
Georgetown was paced by Miller with 12 points and Laila Jewett who had 10 points.
For the game, Villanova was 25-of-66 from the field (37.9%), 8-of-23 from three-point range (34.8%) and 9-of-11 from the foul line (81.8%), while the Hoyas shot 34.5 percent from the floor (19-of-55), 33.3 percent from long distance (7-of-21) and 66.7 percent from he charity stripe (10-of-15).
Villanova returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 11 with a game at Xavier.
