CINCINNATI -- The Villanova Wildcats led wire-to-wire in a convincing 78-38 road win over the Xavier Musketeers. With the victory, Villanova improves to 20-5 overall and 13-3 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier falls to 11-14 on the season and 4-12 in league action.
With a jump shot at the 2:16 mark of the third quarter, sophomore guard Jasmine Bascoe became the 32nd player in Villanova women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points.
Bascoe came out strong, scoring the first eight points of the game for the Wildcats and helping her team to an early 10-2 lead. Villanova used the early surge to control the opening period and lead 15-8 after the game's first 10 minutes.
Villanova led 20-8 early in the second quarter, when the Wildcats went on a 14-4 run to open-up a 34-12 advantage with 2:22 remaining. Junior guard Kelsey Joens highlighted the run with a three-ball from the wing and a driving lay-up.
The Wildcats dominated the third quarter, out scoring the Musketeers by a 37-15 margin. Villanova shot a sizzling 68.1 percent from the field in the period on 15-of-22 shooting, including a 7-of-11 effort from three-point range.
Villanova would lead by as many as 42 in the game en route to the dominating win.
In the victory, Bascoe led all scorers with 18 points to go with seven assists, while Brynn McCurry had 15 points. She was 6-of-8 from the field and 2-of-2 from three-point range. Ryanne Allen was the third Wildcat in double figures with 11 points.
Seton Hall was paced by Meri Kanerva who had 13 points.
For the game, Villanova was 33-of-72 from the field (45,8%), 11-of-33 from three-point range (33.3%) and 1-of-4 from the foul line (25.0%), while Xavier shot 27.7 percent from the floor (13-of-47), 25.9 percent from long distance (7-of-27) and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe (5-of-6). Villanova owned a 48-27 advantage on the backboards.
Villanova returns to action on Sunday with a road game at Creighton. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m., eastern time and the game can be seen on TruTV.
