BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Villanova University men's tennis team will welcome BIG EAST opponent Marquette on Saturday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the Bryn Mawr Racquet Club.
Villanova enters conference play with a 5-8 record, coming off a strong road victory over Loyola Maryland this past Saturday.
In their last outing, the Wildcats set the tone early by securing the doubles point, winning two of three matches. The duo of
Cooper Gordon and
Ethan Carr battled to a 7-6 victory at the No. 1 position, while
Kush Anand and
Thomas Wakefield followed with a convincing 6-2 win at No. 2 to clinch the point. Loyola Maryland claimed the No. 3 doubles match in another tightly contested 7-6 decision.
Villanova carried that momentum into singles play, delivering a dominant performance with five wins in six matches. Gordon led the way with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory at the top spot, and Carr followed with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2.
At No. 3,
Will Monahan rallied after dropping the opening set to earn a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory, while Wakefield added a 7-5, 6-1 result at No. 4.
Evan Ancu capped the Wildcats' scoring with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6, with Loyola Maryland's lone point coming at No. 5.
Marquette enters Saturday's match with a 3-12 record on the season. The Golden Eagles have picked up wins over Illinois State, Chicago State and Fairfield, but have faced a challenging schedule that includes matchups against Notre Dame, Northwestern, Wisconsin and Xavier, among others. Marquette is still searching for its first road win of the season, entering the weekend at 0-7 away from home.
Originally scheduled for the Villanova Tennis Complex, Saturday's match has been moved to the Bryn Mawr Racquet Club due to weather.
