ARLINGTON, Texas – The Villanova baseball team dropped game two of its weekend series against UT Arlington, 11-3, on Saturday, March 28, at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Early Pitching Duel
Villanova threatened in the opening inning, as seniors
Michael Whooley and
Collin Quintano each delivered two-out singles to put a pair on base, but the Wildcats were unable to cash in.
Graduate starter
Jack Kelley came out sharp, striking out two in a scoreless first inning to keep the game even at 0-0.
UTA Strikes First
Freshman
Larry Hotaling recorded Villanova's first hit of the second inning and swiped second to move into scoring position, but was left stranded.
UT Arlington answered in the bottom half, using a leadoff double and a run-scoring single to take a 1-0 lead. Kelley limited further damage and kept the deficit to one.
Wildcats Take the Lead
After a quiet third inning on both sides, Villanova broke through in the fourth. Quintano notched his second hit of the day and
Carter Richey followed with a walk to put two aboard with no outs.
Hotaling advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt before
Mark Gialluisi delivered an RBI single to tie the game.
Jack Roventini followed with a sacrifice fly, giving the Wildcats their first lead of the series at 2-1.
Kelley and the Villanova defense backed it up with a strong bottom half, allowing just one hit to preserve the lead.
Big Fifth Inning Swings Momentum
Villanova was retired quickly in the fifth, and UT Arlington capitalized in a big way in the bottom half.
The Mavericks loaded the bases with no outs and broke the game open with a bases-clearing triple to jump in front. UT Arlington continued to add on, scoring six runs in the inning to take control of the game.
UTA Adds Insurance
The Mavericks continued to build their lead over the next two innings, adding two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to extend the advantage to 11-2.
Villanova's bullpen saw appearances from
JP Podgorski and
Jack Chavez, with Chavez recording a pair of strikeouts and a scoreless eighth inning.
Late Push Falls Short
The Wildcats plated a run in the eighth when Whooley singled, stole second, and came around to score on Quintano's RBI single.
However, Villanova was unable to generate further offense and went down in order in the ninth.
