PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Villanova baseball team dropped the opening game of the Liberty Bell Classic to Lafayette, 11-1, on Tuesday, March 31, at Villanova Ballpark.
FIRST INNING
Lafayette opened the game with a leadoff single, but starter
Matthew Kahn quickly settled in, striking out the next three batters to end the frame.
Villanova got a one-out single from sophomore
Brayden Leonard in the bottom half, but a double play erased the threat and ended the inning.
SECOND INNING
Kahn continued to deal, retiring the Leopards in order in the second.
The Wildcats put together a scoring opportunity in the bottom half, as
Collin Quintano and
John Freitag led off with back-to-back hits. However, with the bases loaded and one out, Villanova grounded into an inning-ending double play to keep the game scoreless.
THIRD INNING
Lafayette broke through in the third inning. After reaching on an error and a hit-by-pitch, Max Collea launched a three-run home run to left field to give the Leopards a 3-0 lead.
Despite the damage, Kahn remained sharp, adding two more strikeouts in the inning. He finished with eight strikeouts over 4.0+ innings of work.
FOURTH INNING
Villanova answered in the fourth to get on the board. Redshirt sophomore
Mark Gialluisi delivered an RBI double to left field, scoring Freitag and cutting the deficit to 3-1.
FIFTH INNING
Lafayette extended its lead in the fifth on a solo home run by Teddy Cashman, making it 4-1.
Villanova collected hits from
Jack Roventini and
Austin Lemon in the bottom half but was unable to push a run across.
LATE INNINGS
The game remained relatively quiet through the middle innings, as both teams struggled to capitalize on scoring chances. Villanova had multiple opportunities with runners in scoring position but could not convert.
Lafayette added a run in the eighth and then broke the game open in the ninth. The Leopards scored six runs on three hits, highlighted by a bases-clearing grand slam from Kyle McKeran to extend the lead to 11-1.
Villanova was unable to respond in the bottom of the ninth, sealing the loss in the tournament opener.
