Softball Splits Senior Day Double-Header with George Mason

VILLANOVA, Pa. — The Villanova softball team split a doubleheader with George Mason Saturday at the VU Softball Complex.

The 'Cats (10-35) remain tied with the Patriots (23-20) in the all-time series, now sitting at 4-4.

Game One: Villanova 6, George Mason 1

Kat Gallant started her first game since March 22, pitching 2 2/3 innings, striking out one and giving up a single run on three hits. Gallant scored a no-decision in the contest.

VU struck early, scoring four runs in the first inning, first on a double steal which saw Maddie Burrows run home after Maranda Runco's first career steal.

Mackenzie Waghorn then doubled down the right field line, bringing across two runs before Cox scored a third on the throw.

George Mason got one back in the third inning making it a 4-1 game.

Villanova once again got on the board in the fourth on a Runco RBI single to make it 5-1.

Burrows gave the 'Cats insurance in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double to left which scored Aubrey Police

Lexi Kobryn (W, 3-11) scored the win after 4 1/3 innings of relief, striking out four, walking one and shutting out the Patriots.

Game Two: Villanova 3, George Mason 11

Maggie King (L, 2-6) started the second game, pitching three innings, walking one, striking out one and giving up four runs on seven hits.

George Mason scored the first nine runs of the game, getting out to a 9-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

Looking to avoid being run-ruled, Villanova scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Runco began the scoring with a sacrifice fly to score Kendall Spivey. Lilly St. Jean then singled in two runs to make it 9-3.

The Patriots added two more in the top of the seventh before a scoreless bottom half, bringing the game to its final score of 11-3.
