Penn Relays: CJ Sullivan and Matt Bogdan Headline Distance Night Events for Villanova

Sullivan was the runner-up in the 10000 meters and Bogdan tallied a top 10 Wildcats performance in the 3000 meter steeplechase on distance night at Franklin Field

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Junior distance runner CJ Sullivan (Milton, Mass.) was the runner-up in his first career 10K race and graduate student Matt Bogdan (Howell, N.J.) instantly surged into seventh place in school history in the 3000 meter steeplechase while running the event for the first time in a Villanova singlet under the Franklin Field lights on Thursday night. They were among the top performers for the Wildcats on distance night at the 2026 Penn Relays, celebrating with America250 as the 130th edition of the world's oldest and largest track & field competition kicked off.

Sullivan closed out the night just after 10:30 p.m. with a time of 29:20.65 in the 10000 meters. He finished second out of more than two dozen runners after running a strong and steady race from start to finish. Sullivan stayed with a leading pack of three runners for the entirety of the race, settling into third place in the early laps and eventually running with the lead for nearly 4,000 meters during the middle of the race.

He surged ahead one spot during the bell lap and held off a charging William & Mary runner by less than a second at the finish line. Sullivan's time was not far from cracking the top 10 of the Villanova performance list in a race that showcased his versatility. He made his debut in the track 10K (he has run the distance in cross country) after having already run 13:41.28 in the 5000 meters earlier this outdoor season.

Each of the Wildcats distance runners named Sullivan fared well in Thursday night's race, as Nick Sullivan (Middletown, N.J.) finished in the top half of the field with a time of 30:25.48. Villanova and Navy were the only two schools to have two runners in the top 12 finishing spots.

Bogdan has had plenty of career success in the steeplechase, qualifying for the 2024 NCAA East Preliminary and finishing as high as ninth at the ACC Championships while running for North Carolina State. Thursday night was his first time racing the steeplechase for the Wildcats and he crossed the finish line under nine minutes for the fifth time in his career.

In fact, Bogdan did more than just break nine minutes. He lowered his lifetime PR by more than three seconds and posted a time of 8:49.58 to place seventh in his heat and 10th overall out of 35 athletes. His mark puts him seventh in Villanova history in the steeplechase, gives him this year's BIG EAST lead and stands as a time that should put him in excellent position for a return trip to the NCAA regional meet next month. He is the Wildcats third athlete in the last 16 years to impact the program's top 10 performance list.

Sophomore Jack Fenlon (Laois, Ireland) was another of Villanova's standout performers on Thursday night. He raced in the championship section of the 1500 meters and finished fourth in his heat with a personal best time of 3:42.52. Fenlon cut nearly two full seconds off the PR he had recorded earlier this month at Princeton while finishing fourth in his Penn Relays heat and fifth overall out of 34 runners.

He has recorded PRs this calendar year at four distances: the mile and 3000 meters indoors followed by the 1500 meters and 5000 meters outdoors. Graduate student Devon Comber (Ambler, Pa.) posted a season best time of 3:44.31 in the second heat of the 1500 meters.

The duo of graduate student Tristan Bolinsky (Gordon, Pa.) and freshman Theo Hedgemon (Atlanta, Ga.) competed in the hammer which was the team's only field event of the day. Bolinsky has competed at the Penn Relays in the discus every full season of his collegiate career and is entered in that event for the fourth time on Friday afternoon. Thursday was his first time throwing the hammer at the Penn Relays however, and he recorded a distance of 55.11 meters.

Hedgemon tallied a season best mark of 51.75 meters and inched closer to the top 10 on the program's all-time performance list. He is just five centimeters away from that distinction now after registering his best throw on his third and final attempt Thursday following two fouls. Bolinsky and Hedgemon each rank in the top eight of the BIG EAST this season.

Friday's schedule for Villanova will be highlighted by the Championship of America distance medley relay at 2:40 p.m. Later in the evening, the men's 4x400 meter relay squad will run in the college section heats at 8 p.m. In the two field events on the schedule, Bolinsky throws the discus at 12 p.m. and freshman Yianni Papanikolas (Toms River, N.J.) competes in the shot put at 3 p.m. Those events each take place at the Mondschein Throwing Complex.
