VILLANOVA, Pa. — The Villanova softball team defeated St. John's 7-2 at the VU Softball Complex Friday.
The 'Cats (12-39, 5-17 BIG EAST) snapped a four-game losing streak and beat the Red Storm (32-21, 9-13) for the first time since 2024.
Kat Gallant (W, 3-10) put together her best performance of the season, pitching a complete game, striking out four, walking one and giving up two runs on nine hits. The performance was her second complete game of the season (March 6 against DePaul) and 26th of her career.
After surrendering a run in the top of the second, the 'Cats scored five runs on Ana Serafiko to take a 5-1 lead.
The rally began with
Jaclyn Morra's second career triple, scoring
Lilly St. Jean and
Jacquelyn Cox.
Ava Mahnken then singled to bring home Morra and later scored on
Maranda Runco's first career triple.
With both pitchers settling in, the game stayed at 5-1 until the sixth inning, when Mahnken scored on a double steal initiated by Burrows.
Maranda Runco hit a sac-fly to center to score Burrows for her second RBI of the day.
St. John's scored a run in the top of the seventh to make it a 7-2 game, but the contest was closed out by Gallant without further damage.
Runco tied Paige Rauch at 45 for the single-season walk record and will look to break the record in the final two games of the season.
