Olivia Allen Advances to National Quarterfinal Round of 400 Meter Hurdles

Villanova opened women’s competition with 1500 meters and hurdles at NCAA East First Round

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Junior sprinter Olivia Allen (Kingwood, Texas) powered down the home straightaway in strong position and earned an automatic qualifying spot to the quarterfinal round of the 400 meter hurdles at the 2026 NCAA East First Round on Thursday night. She crossed the finish line in 58.10 and came in third her heat to secure a spot on Saturday night when a trip to the national championships will be on the line.

Allen made the most of her second career race at the NCAA East First Round meet. The three-time BIG EAST champion and second-ranked runner in school history in the 400 meter hurdles competed in the fourth of six national first round heats at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and Complex against a stacked section that featured five runners who had run faster than 58.10 this season. Allen was one of those five, entering with a PR of 57.24 from her gold medal race at the BIG EAST Championships two weeks ago.

Thursday night's race marks the fourth time in Allen's career and third time this season that she has run 58.10 or faster. She held off the fourth place finisher in her heat by just over a quarter of a second to comfortably move on to the national quarterfinal round which takes place on Saturday evening at 7:25 p.m. Allen will be in the first of three heats on Saturday, with the top three finishers in each heat and the next three fastest times moving on to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., next month.

Earlier in the evening, the women's distance trio of graduate student Nikki Vanasse (Martinsville, N.J.), sophomore Bella Walsh (Wilmington, Del.) and sophomore Rosie Shay (Middletown, N.J.) competed in three separate first round heats of the 1500 meters. They all placed in the top seven of closely-contested races, with tonight's outings marking the career debut for both Walsh and Shay at the NCAA East First Round meet.

Vanasse is a three-time veteran of the meet and had the best time of the Villanova trio in tonight's heats. She finished in 4:16.84 in the first of four sections and placed seventh in the race after a furious finish over the final 250 meters in which she passed several runners who were in front of her at the start of the final lap. Vanasse nearly matched her season best of 4:16.72 which was set at the Penn Relays last month.

The final two heats of the 1500 meters featured Shay in the third section and Walsh in the final one. Walsh stayed within striking distance of the leading pack through much of the race and wound up sixth at the finish line with a time of 4:18.05. She wrapped up a collegiate season in which she recorded personal bests at every distance from 800 meters to 3000 meters.

Shay came in seventh in the third heat with a time of 4:20.14. She concludes a collegiate season in which she was the BIG EAST silver medalist in the 1500 meters. Walsh (eighth) and Shay (10th) each moved into the top 10 in school history in the 1500 meters this season with personal best times of 4:13.56 and 4:13.98, respectively.

Men's action is back on tap for Friday night in Lexington with the quarterfinal round of the 3000 meter steeplechase and semifinals in the 5000 meters. The meet concludes with women's competition on Saturday when the Wildcats will have entries in the high jump, 400 meter hurdles and 5000 meters.
