LEXINGTON, Ky.—Four athletes in three different rounds of competition made for a full day for Villanova as the NCAA East First Round concluded at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field Complex on Saturday afternoon and evening. Graduate student
Margaret Carroll (Mount Wolf, Pa.) and junior
Tilly O'Connor (Spring Lake, N.J.) raced in the national semifinals of the 5000 meters, while junior sprinter
Olivia Allen (Kingwood, Texas) competed in the quarterfinals of the 400 meter hurdles and junior
Malaika Cunningham (St. Andrew, Jamaica) was in action in the first round of the high jump.
Cunningham was the first athlete to get underway for the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon. She made her third straight appearance at this meet and equaled her season best mark with a successful jump at 1.76 meters. Cunningham came on strong late in the outdoor season, finishing second at the Penn Relays and then jumping 1.76 meters at both the BIG EAST Championships and at Saturday's East First Round meet. After missing her first attempt of the day at the opening height of 1.71 meters, Cunningham tallied two straight successful jumps at that height and 1.76 meters.
Just over half the field – 28 of 48 competitors – remained in the competition when the bar was raised to 1.79 meters, which would have been a lifetime best for Cunningham. She missed her three tries at that height but tied for a 21
st place finish overall. Cunningham has placed in the top half of the NCAA East First Round field in each of the three seasons of her collegiate career.
Allen competed in the quarterfinal heats of the 400 meter hurdles and posted her second fastest time this season and of her career. She crossed the finish line in 57.71 to finish sixth in her heat and 17
th overall in the quarterfinal round. Allen's only other time below 58 seconds was at this year's BIG EAST Championships when she posted a PB of 57.24 in the final. This is the second straight year that Allen has qualified for NCAA East First Round competition in the hurdles. She improved from a 46
th place finish in last season's opening round to a 17
th place standing in Saturday's quarterfinals.
The final individual event after four days of men's and women's competition in Kentucky was the national semifinal round of the 5000 meters. Carroll and O'Connor each raced in the first of two heats and posted times of 16:08.94 and 16:16.70, respectively. It was the career debut for both runners at this meet and they ranked 26
th and 35
th, respectively. Earlier this outdoor season, O'Connor (15:42.69) and Carroll (15:54.86) each broke 16 minutes in the 5K.
