Colon and Coyne Named to PhillySIDA Academic All-Area Team

The pair bring Villanova Rowing to four mentions on local list in last five years

PHILADELPHIA -- Thursday saw two Villanova rowers land PhillySIDA Academic All-Area plaudits with Jalyn Colon and Maggie Coyne earning spots on the local list.

The pair are a part of a 10-athlete team that is voted on by the Philadelphia metropolitan area's 30 sports information offices. In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area, an athlete must be in his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or better.

This marks the seventh and eighth times that a Wildcat has landed on the list since the 2005-06 season. Villanova has been mentioned on the list in four of the last five seasons with the last two coming in back-to-back years.

The All-CAA duo raced in all six events for the 'Cats this year, spending most of their time with the Varsity 8. The conference honor was the first of Colon's career while being the third of Coyne's time as a Wildcat. They were part of two CAA Boat of the Week teams with the V8 during the spring. They raced with two bronze-medal boats at the Head of the Schuylkill in the Championship 4s (13:53.013) and Championship 8s (12:45.156). In their first race of the spring, they saw a second-place Grand Final finish with the V8 at the Ram Invitational, posting a time of 8:31.2 before helping the V8 to a ninth-place finish at the Knecht Cup in 6:58.57. They finished as high as third-place with the V8 against nationally-ranked teams in a weekend of racing at the Lake Wheeler Invitational, crossing just behind No. 15 Alabama and No. 22 North Carolina in that specific heat. The season finale brought a fourth-place grand Final finish at the CAA Championships in the V8's best time of the season (6:39.809).

Academically, Coyne, a senior Communications major, and Colon, a sophomore Political Science major, were also lauded as CRCA Scholar-Athlete Team members at the end of the season. Coyne also earned CSC Academic All-District nods in each of her last two seasons on the Main Line to close her career.
