Golf Finishes Seventh in Season Opener

Rohde Shines in Wildcat Debut

HAMILTON, N.Y. — The Villanova men's golf team competed in the first tournament of the season at the Alex Lagowitz Memorial. The Wildcats shot 874 (+10) to place seventh. Seton Hall won the team title, shooting 11 under, and Charlie Barrickman of Bucknell shot -7 to win take the individual win.

The 'Cats had a rollercoaster of a first day. They started slow, shooting +11 in the first round, but rebounded with an impressive five under par showing in round two to put them eighth. Their round two score was the second best in the tournament, led by junior Vibhav Alokam, who paced the field with a 67-stroke round.

Villanova rose in the rankings once again over the course of the final round on day two. The Wildcats shot +4 in round three, finishing seventh.  

It was freshman Evan Rohde who led the way for the Wildcats, tying for third in his collegiate debut. The native Texan totaled 212 strokes, resulting in a score of -4. After shooting 74 (+2) in the first round, he found his stride and shot 69 (-3) in each of the final two rounds.

Alokam was the second-place scorer for Villanova. The Michigan native totaled +2 on the weekend, placing 25th. His 67 (-5) stroke performance in round two featured an eagle and six birdies, which helped him match his lowest 18-hole score. He now joins former teammate Ryan Pamer with seven career eagles, the third most in team history. He shot 76 (+4) and 75 (+3) in rounds one and three, respectively.

Luke Leonard was the third Wildcat finisher, placing 35th. The sophomore shot 74 (+2) in the first two rounds and lowered his score to 72 (E) to finish off the tournament. His third-round score equaled his best 18-hole total, and his overall score of 220 (+4) resulted in a new personal best 54-hole score.

Junior Ian Love and senior Nathan Marion were the final two Villanova golfers, tying for 61st place. They each scored 227 (+11), which was a new career low for Love.

Cameron Besaw competed as an individual, shooting a career-low 220 (+4). The junior had an excellent day one, totaling 143 (-1) after two rounds. His 77-shot third round resulted in a 35th place finish.

The Wildcats are back on the course on Sep. 19 competing at The Goat, hosted by Navy.
