Villanova, Pa.-- On Saturday, October 14, the Villanova men's and women's cross country teams traveled to the 28th Memorial Cross Country Classic and NCAA Pre-National Invitational held at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. The men's team was paced in the 10,000 meter race by freshman Ryan Hayden (Richmond, Canada) who finished 34th out of 360 runners with a time of 31:38.3. The men's overall score of 474 points was good enough to place them 14th in the 53-team invitational.
Joining Hayden in the race for Villanova was sophomore Tom Parpoliano (Honeybrook, Pa.) was finished 44th after running a time of 31:49.1. Other runners for Villanova included sophomore John Fasulo (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), junior Ben Showers (West Chester, Pa.), sophomore Tim Styler (Cranford, N.J.), freshman Jason Jabaut (Peru, N.Y.), and junior Eric Reese (Dushore, Pa.). Fasulo finished 64th by running a 32:04.3. Showers, Styler, and Jabaut rounded out the scoring for Villanova by finishing 156th, 199th, and 242nd respectively. Showers ran a time of 32:47.7. Styler finished with a time of 33:09.1 and Jabaut crossed at 34:38.3. Reese did not score, but placed 315th with a time of 34:38.3.
The men finished with a total time of 2:41:28.5 and an average time of 32:17.7.
The top three finishers in the 6,000-meter race for the women were senior Ann McGranahan (Pensacola, Fla.), senior Geraldine McCarthy (Listowel, Ireland), and freshman Rebecca Mitchell (Geneva, Ill.). McGranahan placed 17th by running a time of 21:40.5. McCarthy finished 69th after running a 22:21.0. Mitchell crossed the line in 84th by finishing with a time of 22:26.5.
