1970 MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Villanova's fourth NCAA championship came two days late and a lot of controversy later. At the conclusion of the actual meet, held at William & Mary in Williamsurg, Va., officials declared Oregon the 86-88 winner over the Wildcats.Â
But head coach
Jim 'Jumbo' Elliott insisted one of his runners,
Les Nagy, was incorrectly slotted as the 67th finisher. Officials took to the film to review the race, keying in on a moment when a runner in front of Nagy tripped and fell, holding up Nagy's chance to continue. After checking the video twice to be sure, race officials slid Nagy up to 62nd, giving Villanova the extra three points needed to best Oregon.
In that same race,
Donal Walsh finished second overall. He lost to Steve Prefontaine, who would go on to become a running legend and that year appeared on the cover of
Sports Illustrated.
