Former standout guard Maalik Wayns returned to the program in October 2021 after completing a playing career that included stints in the National Basketball Association and in Europe.
 
Wayns, a native of Philadelphia, rose to prominence in the first decade of the 2000s, eventually becoming a McDonald’s All-American in his senior season at Roman Catholic High School in 2008-09. He enrolled at Villanova in the fall of 2009 and immediately earned a spot in the rotation on a unit that began the season winning 20 of its first 21 and rising to No. 2 in the national polls.
 
As a junior in 2011-12, Wayns led the Wildcats in scoring at 17.6 points per game before electing to turn professional. In three seasons in the Blue and White, Wayns scored 1,191 points and ranks 23rd on the school’s all-time assists list (333).
 
Wayns played for the Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers before embarking on a successful career in Europe.
 
In his current capacity, Wayns fills a staff role focused on off-court development of the Student-Athlete. Previous occupants of the position have included Jason Fraser, Brooks Sales, Curtis Sumpter, Mike Nardi, Darryl Reynolds and Kris Jenkins.
