VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Trevor Banks was named an assistant coach at Villanova in April 2015. Banks comes to Villanova from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, where he served as the assistant coach/recruiting coordinator for three years and the Long Island Rough Riders of the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League (USLPDL), where he served as the 1st team men's assistant coach.
"We are very excited about adding Trevor to our staff," stated Villanova head coach Tom Carlin. "He brings a dynamic personality that our student-athletes will benefit from on a daily basis. His high level of professionalism in regard to player development, recruiting and administrative duties will be a huge asset to our program. We are lucky to have him.
"Additionally, Coach Banks will train our goalkeepers and be able to continue the growth shown under Coach (Zach) Thornton over the past two seasons. He has a strong passion for training and development, so our goalkeepers will benefit a great deal from his expertise."
Banks is a native of Carenco, La., he played his collegiate soccer at Kentucky Wesleyan College from 2006-09 and also logged five seasons in the United States Soccer League. He earned a degree in Communications from Kentucky Wesleyan and added a master's degree in Education from William Woods University in 2010.
In the three years Banks was at the Merchant Marine Academy he oversaw the programs recruiting efforts, player development, strength and conditioning program and administrative duties. Defensive training is Banks' specialty. In the three years Banks was with the Merchant Marine Academy he helped coach the Mariners to a record of 24-23-3 (13-9 Conference), a goal against average (GAA) of .87, 17 shutouts and a couple of appearances in the Landmark Conference playoffs. In Banks' time with the Merchant Marine Academy he helped place 8 players on the Landmark Conference first team with one player (Gavin Yingling) being named Conference Player of the Year.
Banks also worked with the Long Island Rough Riders of the USLPDL from 2012-2014. With the Rough Riders Banks was in charge of the goalkeeping corp. In 2014 Banks mentored goalkeeper Joe Martin to a GAA of .74 and 6 shutouts. Banks also assisted in other aspects of training, the recruitment and signing of players and match evaluation.
Before his time in New York Banks spent the 2011 season working with the defensive core at Barry University, that year Barry posted a GAA of 0.90. During this time, Banks mentored goalkeeper Johnny Rodrigues, who was named to the All-Sunshine State Conference First Team, Daktronics All-South Region First Team and a Daktronics Honorable Mention All-American. Banks helped coach Barry's 2011 squad to a record of 12-3-6 (3-2-3 Conference), an appearance in the conference finals and a run to the NCAA Division II Sweet16, ending the year ranked 13th in the nation.
Banks started his coaching career in 2009 at William Woods University. In the 2009 season, he worked closely with goalkeeper Robert Thibodeaux, who posted a single-season record setting GAA of 0.76 while also being named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention. In the 2010 season, Banks was a part of a program at William Woods that found itself in its first appearance in the conference semifinals, losing to eventual champions Park University.
Banks owns a USSF National "B" License; He also owns an NSCAA Advance National Goalkeeper Diplomas.
