Villanova Announces 1999 Football Schedule

March 10, 1999

Villanova, Pa.--- Villanova University Director of Athletics Tim Hofferth, today announced the Wildcats' 1999 football schedule. The 11-game schedule will include eight Atlantic 10 Conference contests and three games against non-conference opponents. Villanova will face one of its toughest slates in years, as the combined record of the Wildcats' 1999 opponents is an impressive 83-46, with four games coming against conference champions and three coming against Division I-AA Playoff teams, including the 1998 National Champion University of Massachusetts Minutemen.

Villanova will kick off its season on Saturday, Sept. 4, traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face the Division I-A Air Force Falcons. Winners of the Western Athletics Conference (WAC) in 1998, Air Force earned a berth to the Oahu Bowl where they defeated the University of Washington, 45-25. The Falcons finished the season 12-1, ranked No. 10 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll and No. 13 by the Associated Press.

The Wildcats will play three other title winners in September as well, including the Atlantic 10 Champion Richmond Spiders on Sept. 11, the Division I-AA National Champion Massachusetts Minutemen on Sept. 18, and the Ivy League Champion Pennsylvania Quakers on Sept. 25.

Villanova will play five Atlantic 10 foes in October, with three contests coming on the road. Beginning the month at home against James Madison, the Cats will then hit the road to play William & Mary and the University of Connecticut. The Huskies finished 10-3 in 1998, and were one of three Atlantic 10 Conference teams to earn a berth in the Division I-AA Playoffs. Villanova will wrap up the month against Northeastern at Villanova Stadium and New Hampshire on the road.

After a bye week on Nov. 6, the Wildcats will spend the rest of November in the friendly confines of Villanova Stadium. On Nov. 13, Villanova plays host to perennial I-AA power Youngstown State. The Cats will conclude the 1999 regular season against arch rival Delaware on Nov. 20.

Villanova returns 16 starters to a team which finished 6-5 in 1998. It was the third straight winning season for Head Coach Andy Talley and the Wildcat football program.
