NORTHEASTERN REPORT: The Huskies enter play this week with a 3-2 overall record and a 1-2 Atlantic 10 Conference mark. Northeastern's three wins have come against New Hampshire (10-3), Lafayette (41-7) and Rhode Island (24-17), while the losses have been to William & Mary (24-21) and Delaware (27-20). Redshirt freshman quarterback Jason Quinlan started the first game for the Huskies, but injured his shoulder and was replaced by Fred Vallet the last four games. In his four starts, Vallet has completed 77-of-126 for 1,025 yards and 10 touchdowns. Northeastern's most explosive offensive player is wide receiver David Klemic who has tallied 32 receptions for 587 yards and six scores. Klemic is averaging 117.4 receiving yards per game and 18.3 yards per catch. Defensively, Northeastern is paced by its three linebackers Brian Hayden, Steve Kives and Zach Falconer. Hayden leads the team with 40 tackles, while Kives and Falconer are tied for second with 38 total stops. Kives is the team leader in tackles for loss with seven, while Doug Tillberg has a team-best 3.5 sacks.
HUSKIE HEAD COACH BARRY GALLUP: The Huskies are led by Barry Gallup who is in his eighth year at Northeastern. During his tenure as the Huskie mentor, Gallup has compiled a 34-47-1 mark. Last season, Gallup led the Huskies to an impressive 8-3 season that saw him earn New England Coach of the Year honors. Prior to his arrival at Northeastern, Gallup was an assistant coach at Boston College from 1970 until accepting the Northeastern job in 1991. During his playing days at Boston College, Gallup was a two-sport standout in both football and basketball.

TALLEY'S TENURE: Currently in his 14th season on the Main Line, head coach Andy Talley can feel responsible for every facet of the Villanova football program, having started it from scratch in 1985. In his 14 years at Villanova, Talley has recorded a 91-53-1 mark making him the all-time winningest coach in Villanova history. Talley's 19-year overall coaching record currently stands at 118-70-2. During his career as the Wildcat mentor, Talley has guided Villanova to five NCAA playoff appearances (1989, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997) three Conference titles and one Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy. Last season, Talley garnered the Eddie Robinson Award and the AFCA/GTE National Coach of the Year.
A WEEKLY THING: Junior quarterback Chris Boden has started 18 games in his Villanova career and has thrown at least one touchdown pass in all 18 games. In those 18 contests, Boden has tossed three or more scoring strikes nine times. Only twice has Boden thrown just one touchdown pass in a game.
SENIOR LEADERSHIP: With starting tight end Joe Kavanaugh sidelined with a knee injury, senior co-captain Jay Strippoli has picked-up the slack and has performed exceptionally well. After seeing limited action in the season opener at Pittsburgh, Strippoli has returned to record 10 receptions for 97 yards and four touchdowns. His four scoring catches ranks him second on the team. Strippoli has caught at least one pass in four consecutive games including grabbing a career-high tying four versus William & Mary on Sept. 26. Last week at Maine, Strippoli caught a 12-yard scoring strike for Villanova's lone touchdown of the day. Three of Strippoli's last six receptions have resulted in touchdowns.
FAMILIARITY: Starting center Ryan Knight missed the game last week versus Maine due to a sprained ankle. With Knight unable to play, true freshman Robert Richardson made his first career start. While Richardson is making the adjustment to college football, he had no problem becoming familiar with Wildcat quarterback Chris Boden. Richardson and Boden were high school teammates at San Clemente High School in San Clemente, Calif.
ON GUARD: Villanova's starting guards along the offensive line, Matt Engel and Craig Johnson, came to Villanova from Beantown where they were members of the Boston University football program. After Boston U. dropped its football program last season, Engel and Johnson opted to continue their football careers at Villanova. Both have started the first five games for the 'Cats this season.
RETURN TO BEANTOWN: Three members of the 1998 Villanova football team will be returning to Boston this week where their collegiate careers began. Along with offensive linemen Craig Johnson and Matt Engel, running back Roger Harriott transferred to Villanova this year from Boston University. As a sophomore last year, Harriott rushed for 1,333 yards on 250 carries and seven touchdowns. The 1,333 yards rushing is the third highest single-season total in Boston University history. For his efforts last season, Harriott earned first team All-Atlantic 10 honors and was named the Harry Agannis memorial Award winner as the team's MVP. Engel and Johnson were both mainstays on the Boston University offensive line last year. Johnson was the starting left tackle after lettering as a defensive tackle in 1996, while Engel started at guard. Last season, Johnson garnered the Jim Hunt Award as the most improved player on the Terrier squad. Engel was also honored last year, winning the Jim Meredith Award which is presented annually to the player who best exemplifies competiveness.
IRON MEN: Offensive tackles Mitch McCrimmon and Stan Bennett have provided the Wildcats with a great deal of consistency. McCrimmon, who is in his third season as a starter, has started 33 consecutive games for Villanova. Bennett, who started all 13 games at guard last year as a true freshman, moved to tackle this season and has made 18 consecutive starts throughout his Villanova career.
SANGO TIES CAREER-HIGH: Redshirt freshman wide receiver Murle Sango tied a career-high with five receptions in the loss last week at Maine. For the season, Sango has made 13 receptions for 140 yards.
FIRST QUARTER SUCCESS: The Wildcats have found a great deal of success in first quarters of games this season. Thus far this year, the 'Cats have outscored their opponents 45-13 in the opening quarter.
DOUBLE FIGURE TACKLER: Junior linebacker Shaun Lyons has registered three-straight games with double figures in tackles. His streak began at James Madison when he made 14 stops, followed by a 12 tackle effort versus William & Mary. Last week at Maine, he recorded 10 total stops. For the year, Lyons leads the team with 56 tackles which ranks him second in the Atlantic 10. Last season, Lyons led Villanova in tackles with 113.
OVERTIME HISTORY: Villanova's 34-31 overtime win against Delaware on Saturday, Sept. 12 was the Wildcats' first overtime game since Sept. 23, 1995 when James Madison edged the 'Cats 28-27 at Villanova Stadium. During Andy Talley's tenure as Villanova's head football coach, the Wildcats have participated in five overtime games and have tallied a 3-2 record. Four of the five overtime games have been played at Villanova Stadium.
AWAY FROM HOME: This week's game at Northeastern is the second of four-straight away games for Villanova. Following a bye week next Saturday, the 'Cats travel to Massachusetts on Oct. 24, and at Fordham on Oct. 31. The Wildcats next appearance on the Villanova Stadium turf is Nov. 7 versus Richmond.
WILDCATS ON THE RADIO: Every Villanova football game this season will be carried live by the Villanova Football Radio Network. The flagship station for the Wildcats this season will be WFIL-AM 560. Also carrying Wildcat games in 1998 will be WJNN-FM 106.7 out of Cape May, N.J. Returning for his 12th season as Villanova's play-by-play man is Joe Eichhorn. Assisting Eichhorn in the booth and handling color analysis duties will be Ryan Fannon who has been part of the Wildcat broadcasting team for the last five seasons.
TALK TO TALLEY: Beginning August 31 and running every Monday morning until November 23 (except Labor Day), the Atlantic 10 will conduct a teleconference with each of the league's head coaches. The teleconference will start 10 a.m. on Monday mornings with a brief recap of the weekend's action, the week's honor roll and other pertinent information. Following that, each head coach will be assigned a 10-minute slot to discuss his team, their upcoming opponent and field any questions from the media. Villanova head coach Andy Talley will be available on the teleconference from 10:30 a.m. until 10:40 a.m. Members of the media wishing to take part in the conference may call 334-323-4100 and enter passcode #12345.
MORE TALLEY TALK: Beginning this season, WFIL 560-AM will broadcast the Andy Talley Radio Show. The one-hour call in show is hosted by color commentator Ryan Fannon and will provide a weekly recap of Villanova football games, as well as a preview of upcoming contests. The show will be held at the Wild Onion Restaurant located just up the street from Villanova Stadium on Conestoga Road. Throughout the one-hour program, Fannon and Coach Talley will take questions about all aspects of the Wildcat football program, in addition to fielding questions concerning all the teams in the Atlantic 10 Conference, as well as NCAA I-AA football on the national scene. This week's show will be held on Sunday, Oct. 11 from noon-1 p.m.
POLL HISTORY: Before earning the nation's top spot on Oct. 27, 1997 Villanova's previous best ranking was during the 1992 season when the Wildcats were No. 2 for three weeks from Sept. 28-Oct. 12. At one point, beginning on Sept. 9, 1991, Villanova appeared in the national rankings for 25 consecutive weeks falling out early in the 1993 season. Villanova made its first showing in the I-AA poll on Oct. 9, 1988 when they appeared four consecutive weeks reaching as high as No. 15 on two occasions. In 1989, the 'Cats cracked the poll three times: 10/24 (No. 17), 10/30 (No. 11) and 11/20 (No. 16). After not appearing at all during both the 1994 and 1995 seasons, the 'Cats returned to the Top 25 on Sept. 16, 1996 with a No. 18 ranking. Villanova remained in the poll all season long, reaching as high as No. 9 on Oct. 14. This season, Villanova began the season unranked before cracking the Top 25 on Sept. 2 with a No. 18 ranking.
STREAKING TO A HALT: Villanova's loss to Maine last Saturday was its first conference loss since the Wildcats lost at New Hampshire, 34-0, on Nov. 9, 1996. Maine stopped Villanova's streak at 12 straight conference victories. In Villanova's last 21 conference contests, the 'Cats have recorded an impressive 18-3 mark.
THE LAST TIME: Villanova has not lost two games in a row since the 1995 season. On Nov. 4, 1995, the Wildcats lost at Rhode Island, 27-10, and then lost at home the next Saturday to New Hampshire, 12-9. These two losses were part of a four game Wildcat losing streak.
HIGH MARKS: Entering play this week at Northeastern, sophomore running back Brian Westbrook leads the Atlantic 10 Conference in three categories. He is tops in receptions per game (8.00 per game), all-purpose yardage (297.8 yards per contest) and scoring (13.2 points per game). Westbrook also ranks high in the national stats. The following is where he rates in both the Atlantic 10 stats and the NCAA stats.

NEARING ANOTHER RECORD: Only a sophomore, running back Brian Westbrook has already established eight Villanova school records. Entering play this Saturday at Northeastern, Westbrook has tallied 11 touchdowns on the season (five rushing, five receiving, one kickoff return). With two scores this week, Westbrook will set another Villanova school record for touchdowns by a sophomore with 13. The current mark of 12 was set by Anthony Cowsette in 1994. The following are Brian Westbrook's school records.
1.Rushing Yards by a Freshman (630 in 1997)
2.Points by a Freshman (72 in 1997)
3.Game Receptions by a Soph. (12 vs Del)
4.Game Receiving Yds by a Soph. (181 vs. JMU)

17 TO HIS CREDIT: Entering this season, Chris Boden had 14 Villanova school records, all of which were tallied in 1997, on his resume. Boden has picked-up right where he left off this year by already recording three school marks in 1998. Thus far this year, he has set school records for completions in a game (40 vs. Delaware), yards passing in a game (422 vs. Delaware) and total yards in a game (413 vs. Delaware).
COMEBACK KIDS: Dating back to the 1997 season, Villanova has trailed heading into the fourth quarter on five occasions and managed to win all five games. The following are the comeback wins:

CALIFORNIA CONNECTION: Villanova definitely has a west coast flavor to its team by evidence of the 18 Californians that appear on the Wildcat roster. Of the 18, 10 are starters (six offense, four defense) with six others appearing on the depth chart.
Last Week:
Maine 44, No. 4 Villanova 10
October 3, 1998 - Alfond Stadium
Heading north to Orono, Maine on Saturday, Oct. 3 to face the University of Maine Black Bears, the No. 4 Villanova Wildcats fell 44-10. The loss snapped a 12-game conference winning streak by the Wildcats and dropped their record to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10.
In the loss, junior quarterback Chris Boden completed 22-of-38 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown, a 12-yard pass to Jay Strippoli. Sophomore running back Brian Westbrook rushed for 73 yards on 14 carries and caught six passes for 69 yards.
The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first with 2:11 remaining in the first quarter as Casey Hannon kicked an 18-yard field goal. Villanova padded its lead to 10-0 in the second quarter, when Boden hit Strippoli from 12-yards out. With the clock winding down, Maine cut the Wildcats lead to three as Steve Gangi caught a five-yard Micky Fein pass with 37 seconds left before intermission.
The Black Bears caught fire in the second half tallying six consecutive scores. Fein threw five more touchdowns, two each to Phil McGeoghan and Drew O'Connor, to give him a school record six for the game. After Todd Jagoutz added a 32-yard field goal with 4:27 remaining, Maine took a 34-point lead and went on to upset the No. 4 ranked Wildcats 44-10.
