SERIES INFORMATION
First Meeting: 1988, VU 20-14
Overall: VU leads 8-1-0
Overall Under Talley: 8-1-0
Last VU Win: 11/1/97, 37-15
Last URI Win: 11/4/95, 27-10
Streak: VU has won two straight

TALLEY'S TENURE: Currently in his 14th season on the Main Line, head coach Andy Talley can feel responsible for every facet of the Villanova football program, having started it from scratch in 1985. In his 14 years at Villanova, Talley has recorded a 93-56-1 mark making him the all-time winningest coach in Villanova history. Talleys 19-year overall coaching record currently stands at 121-72-2. During his career as the Wildcat mentor, Talley has guided Villanova to five NCAA playoff appearances (1989, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997) three Conference titles and one Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy. Last season, Talley garnered the Eddie Robinson Award and the AFCA/GTE National Coach of the Year.

LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD: The only person more busier than Brian Westbrook at Villanova Stadium last Saturday was the scoreboard operator. Not only did Villanova score a school record 65 points in the 65-40 win over Buffalo, but the two teams combined to set a Villanova record for most points combined by two teams. The 105 combined points betters the 88 points that were tallied in the first round of the 1989 playoffs when Georgia Southern defeated the Wildcats, 52-36.

WESTBROOK BREAKS NCAA RECORD: Taking assault on the Villanova record book has not been enough for sophomore sensation Brian Westbrook. In week nine versus Richmond on Nov 7., Westbrook eclipsed the NCAA record for all-purpose yards in a season. Entering play on Saturday, Nov. 21, Westbrook has amassed 2,744 yards of all-purpose yardage.

CHASING HISTORY: Sophomore running back Brian Westbrook has a chance to achieve greatness this Saturday versus Rhode Island. Entering play against the Rams, Westbrook has 873 yards rushing and 1,098 yards receiving. With 127 yards rushing this week, Westbrook will become the first player in the history of NCAA Football at any level to rush for 1,000 yards and receive for 1,000 yards in the same season.

CLOSING IN: Besides trying to become the first collegiate player to ever rush for 1,000 yards and receive for 1,000 yards in the same season, Brian Westbrook also has a shot at two more NCAA records. Entering play Saturday versus Rhode Island, Westbrook has 148 points and 24 touchdowns which are both Atlantic 10 records. The NCAA record for points in a season and touchdowns in a season is held by Geoff Mitchell of Weber State who registered 170 points and scored 28 touchdowns during the 1991 season. To achieve these NCAA records, Westbrook needs 23 points and five scores.

FOUR FOR BRIAN: Last Saturday against Buffalo, Brian Westbrook tallied four touchdowns. This is the fourth time this season that Westbrook has tallied four scores in a game. The other three games came against Pittsburgh, James Madison and Fordham.

WORKHORSE: All year long, Brian Westbrook has been the workhorse for the Villanova Wildcats. However, last Saturday against Buffalo, Westbrook was at times a one man show. The Ft. Washington, Md., native carried the ball 36 times for 170 yards and three scores and he made five receptions for 71 yards and a score. He also added one kickoff return for 21 yards. On Villanovas first drive, Westbrook carried the ball all nine times on the Cats nine play drive and scored on a four-yard run. Of Villanovas first 16 plays last Saturday, Westbrook was involved in the play by either running the ball or having the ball thrown to him on 15 of the plays.

TWO MORE TO HIS CREDIT: In last weeks win over Buffalo, sophomore Brian Westbrook established two more school records. His four touchdowns versus Buffalo gives him 35 for his career, setting the Villanova career touchdown mark. The previous mark of 34 was jointly held by Brian Finneran and Mike Siani. Westbrook also broke Finnerans record for points in a season. Finneran tallied 124 points in 1997. Westbrook currently has 148 points. Only a sophomore, Westbrook now owns 13 school records with 11 of them being set this year. The following are Brian Westbrooks school records.

       1. Rushing Yards by a Freshman (630 in 1997) 2. Points by a Freshman (72 in 1997) 3. Game Receptions by a Soph. (12 vs Del) 4. Game Receiving Yds by a Soph. (181 vs. JMU) 5. All-purpose Yards in a Game (428 vs. Pitt) 6. Highest Avg. Yards per Play (16.4 vs. Pitt) 7. Kickoff Return Yards in a Game (152 vs. Pitt) 8. First in school history to have two career kickoff returns for TDs 9. Points by a sophomore (currently has 148)10. TDs by a sophomore (currently has 24)11. TDs in a season (currently has 24)12. Points in a season (currently has 148)13. TDs in a career (currently has 35)
RUNNING WILD: Most of this season, sophomore Brian Westbrook has been making a name for himself as a receiver and an all-purpose back. However, in the last three games,Westbrook has shown that he is also an outstanding running back. In three straight games, Westbrook has gone over the 100-yard plateau. Against Fordham on Oct. 31, he tallied 112 yards rushing, followed by a 179-yard effort versus Richmond and a 170-yard game last Saturday against Buffalo. In all three games, Westbrook had 100 yards at halftime. Last week against Buffalo, he carried the ball a career-high 36 times.

ALL-PURPOSE BRIAN: Brian Westbrook is putting up staggering numbers this season in the all-purpose yardage department. After 10 games, Westbrook has amassed 2,744 yards of all-purpose yardage for an average of 274.4 yards per contest which leads the country. In eight of the 10 games this season, Westbrook has accumulated at least 200 yards of all-purpose yardage, including getting 300+ yards on four occasions (325 vs. JMU/ 310 vs. Delaware/ 300 vs. Richmond) and an amazing 428 of all-purpose yards against I-A Pittsburgh.

DON'T FORGET: In the last couple of weeks, Brian Westbrook has put up big numbers in the rushing department. However, it is important to not forget the amazing receiving numbers he has put up. After 10 games, Westbrook has 83 receptions for 1,098 yards and 13 touchdowns. The 1,098 yards receiving is just the fourth time in school history a Wildcat has tallied 1,000-yards receiving (Brian Finneran 1,389 in 1997/ Mike Siani 1,358 in 1970/ Brian Finneran 1,207 in 1996). Westbrooks 83 receptions is the second highest total in Villanova history to Brian Finnerans 96 in 1997.

BODEN ECLIPSES 70: Junior quarterback Chris Boden completed 23-of-27 for 344 yards and five touchdowns in last weeks win over Buffalo. This was the sixth time in his career and the third time this season that Boden has thrown five scoring strikes in a game. With the five scoring strikes, Boden became just the second Villanova signal caller to throw 70+ career touchdowns, as his career total currently stands at 72. With three touchdown passes this week, Boden will break Kirk Schulzs career touchdown pass mark of 74.

BODEN SHOOTS FOR 7,000: Entering play versus Buffalo on Nov. 14, junior quarterback Chris Boden has thrown for 2,884 yards and 28 touchdowns this season which brings his career total in those categories to 6,922 yards and 72 touchdowns. With 78 yards passing, Boden will become just the second Wildcat signal caller to throw for 7,000 yards in his career. Kirk Schulz owns the school record for passing yards in a career with 9,676. With 116 yards passing, Boden will record back-to-back 3,000-yard passing seasons. His 3,707 yards passing last season was the first 3,000-yard passing season in Villanova history.

WARD REACHES 50: Sophomore wide receiver Steve Ward is enjoying a fine sophomore season. Last week versus Buffalo, Ward had a big day catching six passes for 108 yards and a career-high three scores. In the process, he went over the 50 catch plateau for the season. Entering play this week, Ward has 55 receptions for 739 yards and five scores. The 55 receptions is the sixth highest single season total in Villanova history

SANGO REACHES CENTURY MARK: For the first time in his career, redshirt freshman Murle Sango tallied a 100-yard receiving yard game with a career-high eight receptions for a career-best 120 yards. Together, Sango and fellow wideout Steve Ward combined for 14 receptions for 228 yards.

ACADEMIC HONORS: Senior tight end Jay Strippoli has been named to the 1998 GTE All Academic District II Football first team. Strippoli will now be placed on the national ballot with the Academic All-America Football Team to be released on Tuesday, Dec. 8. Currenlty pursuing his MBA in Villanovas graduate school, Strippoli has a 3.20 grade point average in accounting. A co-captain on this years Wildcat squad, Strippoli has enjoyed a productive senior season, recording 15 receptions for 123 yards and six touchdowns.

HANNON ON A ROLL: Freshman place kicker Casey Hannon has converted 35 consecutive PATs. The streak began at Pittsburgh in the season opener after he got two of his PATs blocked in the first half against the Panthers. In field goal attempts, Hannon is eight-of-nine on the season. Last Saturday versus Buffalo, Hannon was eight-for-eight in PATs and he converted on a 35-yard field goal in the first quarter.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT: With the Villanova backfield being ravaged by injury, the Wildcats had to move wide receiver Luke Stopper to running back for last weeks game against Buffalo. Stopper made an immediate contribution by rushing five times for 26 yards and his first career touchdown.

BIG MAC: Defensive end Chris Machovina has enjoyed an outstanding senior season. After 10 games, the Burke, Va., native has 59 tackles (fourth best on team), and team-highs of 11 tackles for loss and nine sacks. In addition, he has eight quarterback hurries. For his career, Machovina has 34 sacks.

OVERTIME HISTORY: Villanovas 34-31 overtime win against Delaware on Saturday, Sept. 12 was the Wildcats first overtime game since Sept. 23, 1995 when James Madison edged the Cats 28-27 at Villanova Stadium. During Andy Talleys tenure as Villanovas head football coach, the Wildcats have participated in five overtime games and have tallied a 3-2 record. Four of the five overtime games have been played at Villanova Stadium.

WILDCATS ON THE RADIO: Every Villanova football game this season will be carried live by the Villanova Football Radio Network. The flagship station for the Wildcats this season will be WFIL-AM 560. Also carrying Wildcat games in 1998 will be WJNN-FM 106.7 out of Cape May, N.J. Returning for his 12th season as Villanovas play-by-play man is Joe Eichhorn. Assisting Eichhorn this week will be Chris Boyer who will handle the color commentary duties.

POLL HISTORY: Before earning the nations top spot on Oct. 27, 1997 Villanovas previous best ranking was during the 1992 season when the Wildcats were No. 2 for three weeks from Sept. 28-Oct. 12. At one point, beginning on Sept. 9, 1991, Villanova appeared in the national rankings for 25 consecutive weeks falling out early in the 1993 season. Villanova made its first showing in the I-AA poll on Oct. 9, 1988 when they appeared four consecutive weeks reaching as high as No. 15 on two occasions. In 1989, the Cats cracked the poll three times: 10/24 (No. 17), 10/30 (No. 11) and 11/20 (No. 16). After not appearing at all during both the 1994 and 1995 seasons, the Cats returned to the Top 25 on Sept. 16, 1996 with a No. 18 ranking. Villanova remained in the poll all season long, reaching as high as No. 9 on Oct. 14. This season, Villanova began the season unranked before cracking the Top 25 on Sept. 2 with a No. 18 ranking.

17 TO HIS CREDIT: Entering this season, Chris Boden had 14 Villanova school records, all of which were tallied in 1997, on his resume. Boden has picked-up right where he left off this year by already recording three school marks in 1998. Thus far this year, he has set school records for completions in a game (40 vs. Delaware), yards passing in a game (422 vs. Delaware) and total yards in a game (413 vs. Delaware).

Last Game - Villanova 65, Buffalo 40
Nov. 14, 1998 - Villanova Stadium

It was a record breaking day for the Villanova football team as they returned to the .500 mark at 5-5, by beating the University of Buffalo 65-40 at Villanova Stadium. The 65 points scored by the Wildcats broke the previous record for points in a game (64), set last season versus West Chester University.

Villanova was led by sophomore running back Brian Westbrook who totaled 261 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns on the afternoon. On the ground, Westbrook ran for 170 yards on 36 carries and scored three times. He caught five passes for 71 yards and one touchdown as well. In what has been a record shattering season for Westbrook, he set a new mark for points in a season with 148 and touchdowns in a career with 35 in the win over Buffalo.

At quarterback, junior Chris Boden was 23-of-27 for 344 yards and five touchdowns. Two Wildcat receivers posted 100 yard receiving days, with Murle Sango catching eight passes for 120 yards and Steve Ward catching six passes for 108 yards and three scores.

Westbrook got the afternoon started right carrying on all nine plays of the first series, including a four yard touchdown run. With 3:18 remaining in the first quarter, Casey Hannon kicked a 35-yard field goal to give Villanova a 10-0 lead at the end of one period of play.

In the second quarter, the Wildcat offense ran wild scoring four touchdowns. Ward caught touchdown passes of 19 and 33 yards, while Ed Diaz caught a 10-yard scoring strike from Boden and Westbrook ran for the second of his three touchdowns on the ground to give Villanova a 37-7 lead at intermission.

The third quarter was once again all Villanova. After Wards third touchdown catch and a Buffalo score on a five-yard run by David Hinson, Westbrook scored two straight touchdowns to give the Cats a 58-14 lead after three quarters.

The Bulls would go on to make a fourth quarter run scoring three touchdowns in the last 3:04 of regulation, two on touchdown runs of one and seven yards by Marvin Brereton, but Villanova would go on to earn the 65-40.
