Villanova, Pa.--- Hosting the University of Notre Dame on Saturday, April 3, in women's lacrosse action, the Villanova University women's lacrosse team lost to the Fighting Irish, 15-9, despite a late-game comeback. With the loss, the Wildcats' record falls to 3-5 on the season.
Notre Dame jumped out to an early 3-0 lead by the 23:34 mark of the opening half, led by two goals from Lael O'Shaughnessy and two assists from Katherine Scorola. Villanova scored its first goal of the contest at the 23:05 mark on an unassisted goal by freshman Cecily Pierce, to cut the Irish lead to 3-1. Notre Dame ended the half scoring four of the last five goals, however, to take a 7-2 lead into intermission.
The Wildcats opened the second half scoring on Pierce's second goal of the contest to trim the lead to 7-3. Trailing 9-4 with 22:30 left in regulation, Villanova began to rally. Julie Feddeman scored an unassisted goal at the 21:07 mark, followed 1:09 later by Meghan Doyle's third goal of the game. Doyle's goal cut the Irish's lead the 9-6, the closest margin of the contest. That was as close as Villanova would come, as Notre Dame ended the game on a 6-3 run, to take a 15-9 victory back to South Bend.
Leading the Fighting Irish to victory was O'Shaughnessy, who finished the game with six goals. Recording two goals and one assist apiece was Courtney Calabrese and Kathryn Perella, while Kerry Callahan had one goal and a game-high four assists. Getting the victory in goal for Notre Dame was Carrie Marshall, who posted seven saves.
Doyle had yet another outstanding offensive outing for the Wildcats, tallying five goals. She now has a 35 goal on the season. Pierce was tremendous as well recording two goals and one assist, while Julie Feddeman and Liz Kenny each had one goal. In goal for Villanova, Sarah Gilhorn has a game-high 10 saves.
The Wildcats will resume play on Tuesday, April 6, hosting Hofstra at 4:00 p.m.
