Villanova Swimming and Diving Splits at LaSalle

The Villanova women's swimming and diving team won its second consecutive meet, by the score of 128.5-107.5 over the LaSalle Explorers on Friday, Oct. 30, in a meet held at LaSalle University. The Wildcat men's team fell to the Explorers by the score of 141.5-77.5.

The Villanova women were led to victory by sophomore Katie Armitage (North Haven, Conn./ North Haven H.S.), who posted victories in the 200 yard individual medley (2:12.42) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:27.53). Last season as a freshman, Armitage who is currently one of the Big East Conference's top swimmers, won a Big East title in the 400 yard individual medley.

Four other swimmers also won individual events for the Wildcats on the day. Freshman Maddy Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./ Germantown Acad.), took home a victory in the 200 yard butterfly (2:07.76). Crippen has finished in first place in every event she has swam thusfar this season for the Cats through two meets. Senior Jackie Gruters (Sarasota, Fla./ Cardinal Mooney H.S.), junior Julie Lapinsky (Worchester, Mass./ St. Peter's-Marian H.S.), and sophomore Kristen Olson (Moon Twp., Pa./ Moon Area H.S.), were also victorious against LaSalle. Gruters won the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.79, while Lapinsky took the 100 yard freestyle (54.24) and Olson took the 500 yard freestyle (5:01.73).

Performing well in defeat for the Wildcat men were junior Vince Allegra (Oak Brook, Ill., Hinsdale H.S.), and freshman Greg King (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./ Westminster H.S.). Allegra won the 100 yard freestyle (48.89) versus the Explorers, while King posted a victory in the 200 yard butterfly (1:55.69).

For the Villanova diving team, both senior Tibby Fogarty (McMurray, Pa./ Peters Township H.S.), and sophomore Brian Mulligan (Duxbury, Mass./ Duxbury H.S.) tallied tremendous performances for the Wildcats. Fogarty won both the one-meter (233.63) and three-meter (227.7), while Mulligan won the one-meter competition (231.90).

Villanova will resume action on Saturday, Nov. 14, hosting the Penn State Nittany Lions. The men's competition will get underway at 12 noon, while the women will begin at 3 p.m.
