TALLEY'S TENURE: Currently in his 14th season on the Main Line, head coach Andy Talley can feel responsible for every facet of the Villanova football program, having started it from scratch in 1985. In his 14 years at Villanova, Talley has recorded an 89-51-1 mark making him the all-time winningest coach in Villanova history. Talley's 19-year overall coaching record currently stands at 117-69-2. During his career as the Wildcat mentor, Talley has guided Villanova to five NCAA playoff appearances (1989, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997) three Conference titles and one Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy. Last season, Talley garnered the Eddie Robinson Award and the AFCA/GTE National Coach of the Year.

STRONG ARM: Last week versus Delaware, junior quarterback Chris Boden completed 40-of-61 for a school record 422 yards and two touchdowns. The 40 completions also establishes a new school mark. Boden's 61 attempts is the highest number of attempts by a Villanova quarterback since 1991 when Tom Colombo threw 69 passes versus Delaware. By adding these two new records to his credit, Boden now owns 16 Villanova school marks.

CLUTCH PERFORMER: In Villanova's furious fourth quarter comeback versus Delaware last Saturday, quarterback Chris Boden came up big with the game on the line. Trailing 31-17 with 9:11 left in regulation, Boden led Villanova on consecutive scoring drives, completing nine of 11 passes on the two drives.

ACCOLADES: For his efforts last Saturday, Chris Boden was named Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week. In Villanova's 34-31 overtime win, Boden completed 40-of-61 for 422 yards and two touchdowns. This is the fourth time in the last two seasons that Boden has garnered Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week distinction. In addition, Boden was named ECAC Offensive Player of the Week.

ALL-PURPOSE BRIAN: Sophomore running back Brian Westbrook continued to put up big numbers in the all-purpose yards category last Saturday versus Delaware. Against the Blue Hens, Westbrook recorded 28 yards rushing, 94 yards receiving, 24 yards in punt returns and 164 yards in kickoff returns for a total of 310 all-purpose yards. A week earlier at Pittsburgh, Westbrook recorded a school record 428 yards of all-purpose yardage. After two games, he has amassed an incredible 738 all-purpose yards.

MORE ON WESTBROOK: After just two games, Brian Westbrook has already scored six touchdowns for a team-leading 36 points. Of his six scores, three have been via the run, two have been receptions and one has come on an 89-yard kickoff return. He has also tallied back-to-back double figure receiving games with 10 catches versus Pittsburgh and 12 against Delaware.

OVERTIME HISTORY: Villanova's 34-31 overtime win against Delaware last Saturday was the Wildcats' first overtime game since Sept. 23, 1995 when James Madison edged the Cats 28-27 at Villanova Stadium. During Andy Talley's tenure as Villanova's head football coach, the Wildcats have participated in five overtime games and have tallied a 3-2 record. Four of the five overtime games have been played at Villanova Stadium.

OUCH! THAT HURTS: The Wildcats lost a key offensive weapon last Saturday versus Delaware when junior tight end Joe Kavanaugh went down with a knee injury early in the second quarter. The 6-7, 240 pound Kavanaugh had made two receptions for 44 yards before being injured. The injury will sideline him indefinitely. Last season, Kavanugh missed five games due to a broken thumb.

10-STRAIGHT: Dating back to the final regular season game in 1996, Villanova has won 10-straight conference games. The last conference foe to defeat the Wildcats was New Hampshire on Nov. 9, 1996 by a score of 34-0.

OFFENSIVE OUTBURST: With just 73 yards versus James Madison this week, Villanova will surpass the 1,000-yard total offense plateau in just the third game of the season. In the opener versus Pittsburgh, the Wildcats registered 413 yards of total offense, while last week Villanova tallied 498 yards of total offense. Of the 498 yards last week, 422 of them were passing yards. In 13 games a season ago, Vill anova totaled 5,688 yards for an average of 437.5 per game.

PLAYING BY THE RULES: Thus far this year, Villanova has done a great job of not hurting themselves with penalties. After two games, the Cats have committed just four penalties for 35 yards. In the Pittsburgh game, Villanova had two penalties for 10 yards. Last week, the Wildcats had two penalties for 25 yards

STRONG RETURNS: Villanova's kickoff return duo of Brian Westbrook and Ademole Turner have combined to return 11 kickoffs for 377 yards for an outstanding average of 34.3 yards per return. On the year, Westbrook has nine returns for 316 yards (35.1 yards per return) and one score, while Turner has two returns for 61 yards (30.5 yards per return).

CALIFORNIA CONNECTION: Villanova definitely has a west coast flavor to its team by evidence of the 18 Californians that appear on the Wildcat roster. Of the 18, 10 are starters (six offense, four defense) with six others appearing on the depth chart.

GREAT BEGINNING: Freshman kicker Casey Hannon quickly became a crowd favorite at Villanova Stadium last Saturday in his first game on the Goodreau Field turf. In just his second field goal attempt as a collegiate, Hannon connected on a 35-yarder in overtime to give the Wildcats a thrilling 34-31 victory. Earlier in the game, Hannon made a 33-yard field goal in his first try as a Wildcat.

MAKING A NAME: Much has been made about Villanova losing its receiving trio from a year ago that tallied 206 receptions for 3,054 yards and 29 touchdowns. Last week versus Delaware, two of Villanova's young receivers stepped-up and had strong games. Sophomore Steve Ward recorded eight catches for 94 yards and redshirt freshman Murle Sango made five receptions for 72 yards. After two games, Ward has 12 catches for 133 yards, while Sango has seven receptions for 94 yards.

FIRST CAREER INTERCEPTIONS: Two Wildcats recorded their first career interception in the Delaware game last week. Sophomore cornerback Braheem Powell made an acrobatic interception in the first quarter that led to a Wildcat field goal. Junior strong safety Hezekiah Lewis grabbed his first career interception on Delaware's last play from scrimmage of regulation and returned it 28 yards.

DOMINANT DUO: Villanova has two of the top defensive linemen in the Atlantic 10 Conference in seniors Chris Machovina and Jason Tenner. After two games, Tenner has 14 tackles and a sack, while Machovina has nine tackles and a sack. The two have made getting to the quarterback a habit during their careers on the Main Line. Together, Tenner and Machovina have combined to record 46 career quarterback sacks. Machovina, a native of Burke, Va., has registered 26 career sacks, including 12 last season, and Tenner, who hails from Cupertino, Calif., has amassed 20 career sacks. Last year, Tenner led the team with 15 quarterback sacks. Also, last season, Tenner made 13 tackles for loss, while Machovina recorded 12 tackles for loss.

WILDCATS ON THE RADIO: Every Villanova football game this season will be carried live by the Villanova Football Radio Network. The flagship station for the Wildcats this season will be WFIL-AM 560. Also carrying Wildcat games in 1998 will be WJNN-FM 106.7 out of Cape May, N.J. Returning for his 12th season as Villanova's play-by-play man is Joe Eichhorn. Assisting Eichhorn in the booth and handling color analysis duties will be Ryan Fannon who has been part of the Wildcat broadcasting team for the last five seasons. All broadcasts on the Villanova Football Radio Network will begin 30 minutes prior to kickoff with the pre-game show which will feature comments from coach Andy Talley.

TRANSFERS: There are four new members of the Wildcat squad who arrive on the Main Line after transferring from other schools. Three of the four transferred from Boston University after the school decided to drop its football program following the 1997 campaign. The three former Terriers include running back Roger Harriott and offensive linemen Craig Johnson and Matt Engel. All three will be juniors this fall and have two years of eligibility remaining. As a sophomore last year, Harriott rushed for 1,333 yards on 250 carries and seven touchdowns. The 1,333 yards rushing is the third highest single-season total in Boston University history. For his efforts, Harriott earned first team All-Atlantic 10 honors and was named the Harry Agannis Memorial Award winner as the team's MVP. Engel and Johnson were both mainstays on the Boston University offensive line. Johnson was the starting left tackle after lettering as a defensive tackle in 1996, while Engel started at guard. Last season, Johnson garnered the Jim Hunt Award as the most improved player on the Terrier squad.

Engel was also honored last year, winning the Jim Meredith Award which is presented annually to the player who best exemplifies competiveness. The fourth transfer, Casey Hannon, comes to Villanova from Penn State where he spent one season. A native of Lebanon, N.J., Hannon was rated as the fourth best kicker in the country coming out of high school in 1996 by National Recruiting Adviser. Hannon, who has four years of eligibility remaining, will handle both the place kicking and kickoff duties.

TALK TO TALLEY: Beginning August 31 and running every Monday morning until November 23 (except Labor Day), the Atlantic 10 will conduct a teleconference with each of the league's head coaches. The teleconference will start 10 a.m. on Monday mornings with a brief recap of the weekend's action, the week's honor roll and other pertinent information. Following that, each head coach will be assigned a 10-minute slot to discuss his team, their upcoming opponent and field any questions from the media. Villanova head coach Andy Talley will be available on the teleconference from 10:30 a.m. until 10:40 a.m. Members of the media wishing to take part in the conference may call 334-323-4100 and enter passcode #12345.

MORE TALLEY TALK: Beginning this season, WFIL 560-AM will broadcast the Andy Talley Radio Show. The one-hour call in show is hosted by color commentator Ryan Fannon and will provide a weekly recap of Villanova football games, as well as a preview of upcoming contests. The show will be held at the Wild Onion Restaurant located just up the street from Villanova Stadium on Conestoga Road. Throughout the one-hour program, Fannon and Coach Talley will take questions about all aspects of the Wildcat football program, in addition to fielding questions concerning all the teams in the Atlantic 10 Conference, as well as NCAA I-AA football on the national scene. The first show of the year will be on Sunday, Sept. 6 from noon- 1 p.m.

POLL HISTORY: Before earning the nation's top spot on Oct. 27, 1997 Villanova's previous best ranking was during the 1992 season when the Wildcats were No. 2 for three weeks from Sept. 28-Oct. 12. At one point, beginning on Sept. 9, 1991, Villanova appeared in the national rankings for 25 consecutive weeks falling out early in the 1993 season. Villanova made its first showing in the I-AA poll on Oct. 9, 1988 when they appeared four consecutive weeks reaching as high as No. 15 on two occasions. In 1989, the Cats cracked the poll three times: 10/24 (No. 17), 10/30 (No. 11) and 11/20 (No. 16). After not appearing at all during both the 1994 and 1995 seasons, the Cats returned to the Top 25 on Sept. 16, 1996 with a No. 18 ranking. Villanova remained in the poll all season long, reaching as high as No. 9 on Oct. 14. This season, Villanova began the season unranked before cracking the Top 25 on Sept. 2 with a No. 18 ranking.

JAMES MADISON REPORT: The Dukes enter play this week with an 0-2 record, having lost to I-A Maryland (23-15) and No. 12 Hofstra (37-24). Villanova will serve as James Madison's first conference game of the season. Last week versus Hofstra, junior quarterback Greg Maddox completed 26-of-47 for a school-best 388 yards and two touchdowns. The Dukes got great performances last week from wide receivers Earnest Payton (7 receptions, 104 yards, 1 TD) and Lindsay Fleshman (6 receptions, 128 yards). After two games, Maddox has completed 40-of-71 for 519 yards and three scores. He has also thrown three interceptions. On the ground, West Virginia transfer Curtis Keaton has gained 119 yards on 30 carries (4.0 yards per rush) and one touchdown. Defensively, free safety Tony Booth leads th way with 16 tackles followed by defensive back Timm Carper who has 15 total tackles. Defensive linemen Jon Petrunak and Jim Cooper lead the way in the sack department with two each.

DUKE HEAD ALEX WOOD: The Dukes are led by fourth year head coach Alex Wood. In his tenure at James Madison, Wood has guided the Dukes to a 20-16 record. In his first year in 1995, Wood led James Madison to the I-AA playoffs. Wood has brought a variety of coaching experience to JMU and was involved with highly successful programs before arriving in Harrisonburg. While an assistant coach at the University of Miami, Wood was a member of two national championship teams. He has also had coaching stops at Southern, Southern Illinois, Kent, Iowa, Wyoming, Washington State and Wake Forest. Wood is a 1979 graduate of the University of Iowa, where he was a running back for three seasons.

1998 Game-By-Game

Game One
Pittsburgh 48, No. 7 Villanova 41
Sept. 5, 1998 - Pittsburgh Stadium

In the Villanova 1998 season opener against the Division I-A University of Pittsburgh Panthers on Saturday, Sept. 5, the Wildcats pulled to within a touchdown after rallying from a 22-point second half deficit, but fell just short losing to the Panthers 48-41. Sophomore running back Brian Westbrook had a record setting day, totaling 428 all-purpose yards to break the school record held by Pete D'Alonzo, who totaled 322 yards on Sept. 23, 1950, against Duquesne. He also broke three other Villanova marks against Pittsburgh, becoming the first Wildcat to return more than one kickoff back for a touchdown in his career, setting a new record for kickoff return yards in a game with 152, and establishing a school mark for the highest average yards per play at 16.4. Westbrook had four touchdowns on the afternoon as well, catching touchdown passes of five and 15 yards, returning a kickoff 89 yards, and running 48 yards for another score.

Down 13-0 to the Panthers with one quarter almost complete, Villanova finally got on the board as Westbrook scored the first of his four touchdowns. At the 10:39 mark of the second quarter, the Wildcats took their first lead and extended it to 20-13 on junior running back Roger Harriott's first-ever Villanova score.

Pittsburgh quickly struck back, however, and scored four straight touchdowns to take a 41-20 lead with just over nine minutes left in the third quarter. Despite scoring three more touchdown (two by Westbrook and one by sophomore fullback Ducarmel Augustin) in the remainder of the contest, the Wildcats came up just short losing to the Panthers 48-41.

Game Two
No. 8 Villanova 34, No. 4 Delaware 31 OT
Sept. 12, 1998 - Villanova Stadium

Celebrating both its home opener and the school's 1998 Homecoming against the University of Delaware on Saturday, Sept. 12, the Villanova University football team rallied from a 14-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat the No. 4 Blue Hens for the third consecutive time, 34-31 in overtime.

Junior All-American quarterback Chris Boden broke two school records on the afternoon, setting new marks for yardage in a game with 422 and completions in a game with 40. Boden threw two touchdowns on the day as well, including a 10-yard pass to Ducarmel Augustin and an eight-yarder to Jay Strippoli. One week after setting a new Villanova record for all-purpose yards in a game against Pittsburgh, Brian Westbrook was once again outstanding totaling 310 all-purpose yards and rushing for two touchdowns.

With a Delaware touchdown at the 14:47 of the fourth quarter to give the Hens a 31-17 lead, the Wildcats mounted a last quarter comeback. A Boden to Strippoli pass capped off a five play, 80-yard drive and cut the Delaware lead to seven with 7:46 left in the contest. After a Delaware drive failed, Westbrook rushed for the second of his two scores with 2:37 remaining in the fourth, to tie the game 31-31.

Heading into overtime, Villanova recovered a Blue Hen fumble on the Wildcat one-yard line to regain possession. Moving the ball down to the 18-yard line, Casey Hannon set up for his second field goal attempt of the afternoon which he went on to hit from 35-yards out to give Villanova a 34-31 victory.
