VILLANOVA, Pa. - Sophomore Liz Chicarelli scored two goals just 36 seconds apart midway through the second half to help St. Joseph's to a 9-7 victory over Villanova in a game played on Tuesday afternoon at Villanova Stadium. Chicarelli and senior Bridget Curry tallied three goals apiece for the Hawks while the Wildcats were led by sophomore Liz Kenny's (Newtown Square, Pa.) three goals.
A Kenny goal staked Villanova to a 1-0 lead at the 29:33 mark of the first half. Curry scored to knot matters three minutes later. The Wildcats built a 4-2 advantage folowing a goal by Meghan Doyle at the 9:36 point of the first half. A goal by senior Anne Vandergrift cut the lead to 4-3 just before the two clubs went to halftime.
After a two goal burst by St. Joseph's to start the second half, Villanova regained the lead at 6-5 with 23:34 to play on two goals by Kenny seperatedby just 12 seconds. However, St. Joseph;s scored the next three goals - two by Chicarelli - to gain an 8-6 advantage they would not surrender.
Freshman Lauren Bradley made 12 saves in the nets for St. Joseph's whileSarah Gilhorn stopped eight Hawk shots.
Villanova now stands 3-8 overall, 1-3 in the Patriot League while St. Joe's improves to 2-7 overall, 0-2 in the Atlantic Ten.
The Wildcats hit the road for a game at Georgetown on Saturday at noon.
