Villanova Defeats Duquense to Gain Weekend Split

March 21, 1999

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats rode the offensive firepower of senior midfielder Meghan Doyle to a 10-8 victory over Duquesne at Rooney Field in Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon. That win gave Villanova a split on its weekend road trip after the Wildcats fell to Davidson in a contest played at Rooney Field on Saturday afternoon by the score of 14-6.

Goals by Doyle and Liz Kenny staked VU to an early 2-0 advantage against Duquesne but the Dukes rallied to move ahead and take a 5-4 lead into halftime.

Three quick goals before five minutes had elapsed in the second half changed the afternoon's momentum, however. A goal by junior Molly O'Connor 30 seconds into the stanza knotted matters at five. Goals by Doyle and and sophomore midfielder Teri Overturf put the Wildcats in front. Two more scores by Doyle and one by freshman Cecily Pierce closed out the scoring for the Wildcats.

The victory came on the heels of a 14-6 loss to Davidson on Saturday. In that contest Doyle tallied four goals for the Wildcats.

Villanova is now 2-2 on the season, 0-1 in the Patriot League. The Wildcats next see action on Saturday, March 27, in a 1:00 p.m. game at Villanova Stadium against Monmouth. This begins a stretch of six consecutive home games for the Wildcats.
