The Scarlet Knights are giving up 56.2 ppg., while the Wildcats are yielding 57.2 ppg.
PELLICANE HAS-CAREER NIGHT: Sophomore guard Lauren Pellicane led the Villanova attack over West Virginia with a career-high 24 points (7-of-10 from the floor), including a 6-of-9 effort from three-point range. The six three-point field goals ties her career-high. Earlier this year, she connected on six triples at home versus Temple.
DE JA VU: Lauren Pellicanes 24 point performance against West Virginia on Tuesday was the second time in her career and the second time this season that she has registered a 20-point game. Against Temple on Dec. 5, she scored 20 points in Villanovas 92-62 win. In both of these 20-point efforts, Pellicane had identical shooting lines of 7-of-10 from the field and 6-of-9 from three-point range.
IN A ZONE: In Villanovas last eight games, sophomore Lauren Pellicane is a sensational 26-of-49 (53%) from three-point range. For the season, Pellicane is 32-of-78 (41%) from three-point range. Pellicane is currently tied for first in the Big East in three-point field goals made and is ninth in the conference for three-point field goal percentage. She is currently tied for second on the team with Jenea Skeeters in scoring with a 9.5 ppg. average.
DOUBLE FIGURE SCORER:Sophomore center Brandi Barnes continued to put up double figures in the scoring department in Tuesdays 71-56 win over West Virginia. In the victory, Barnes connected on 6-of-10 from the field and scored 13 points. This was the 10th time in 12 games and the seventh consecutive time that she has amassed double figures in points.
CENTER-OF-ATTENTION: For the first time in years, the Villanova Wildcats have a presence at center with 6-3 sophomore Brandi Barnes who has started her Villanova career off in fine fashion. After 12 games, Barnes leads Villanova in scoring (13.1 ppg), rebounding (6.5 rpg), blocked shots (10) and field goal percentage (53.5%). She is currently 11th in the Big East in field goal percentage. Barnes sat out last season after transferring from the University of Maryland.
FERRETTI-STARTS: Fifth-year senior Shannon Ferretti has started the past two games at power forward for the Wildcats. These two starts were Ferrettis first since the 1996-97 season when she started against Boston College on Jan. 25, 1997. As a redshirt freshman in 1995-96, she started 11 of 28 games for the Wildcats. All total, Ferretti has made 14 career starts. In her first start of the season against Providence on Jan. 2, she made 1-of-4 for two points and grabbed six rebounds and had one blocked shot. Against West Virginia, she was 1-of-3 for two points, to go with two rebounds, one assist and one steal.
DEFENSE: Strong defense has always been a trademark of Harry Perretta coached teams. Dating back to the 1994-95 campaign, Villanova has never given up more than 60 points per game in a season. After 12 games this year, Villanova is yielding just 57.2 ppg. and have held three opponents under 50 points and seven opponents under 60 points. The Wildcats are currently 12th in the country in scoring defense. Last season, the Wildcats held their opponents to just 56.4 ppg, which led the Big East Conference and ranked sixth nationally. In 17 of the teams 19 wins in 1997-98, Villanova held its opponents under 60 points and they held seven teams under 50 points.
MAGIC 60: In the last three seasons, Villanova is 33-4 when holding opponents under 60 points. Thus far this year, Villanova is 5-2 when keeping the opponent under 60 points. Last season, the Cats were 17-2 when holding the opposition under 60 points, while in 1996-97, Villanova was a perfect 11-0 when keeping the opponent under 60 points. Also last season, the Wildcats were 14-4 when recording 60 or more points.
CLOSING IN: Senior point guard Shanette Lee is on pace to become the all-time assist leader in Villanova womens basketball history. In Tuesdays win at West Virginia, Lee tallied nine more assists, bringing her career total to 458. For the season, the Philadelphia, Pa., native has 60 assists which ranks her fourth in the Big East. Entering play versus Rutgers, Lee is fifth on Villanovas all-time assist list. With eight assists against Rutgers, Lee will move pass Nancy Bernhardt into fourth place on the all-time Villanova assist chart. She is just 63 assists short of Lynn Tighes all-time career best of 521 assists. Tighe is currently Villanovas Senior Womens Administrator.
TOP-RESERVES: Redshirt freshman Stephanie Baker and sophomore Mimi Riley have emerged as head coach Harry Perrettas top reserves. Baker, the first forward/center of the bench, has been very productive in the minutes she has logged. Averaging 13.1 minutes per contest, Baker is averaging 4.6 ppg. and 3.9 rpg. Of her 47 rebounds, 15 have been offensive. Riley is a versatile performer who sees time at both guard spots as well as the small forward slot. Riley is currently averaging 5.8 ppg., 3.4 rpg. and 1.8 apg. Known for her slashing ability, Riley has improved her jump shot from a year ago. She is currently 26-of-59 (44.1%) from the field including 4-of-10 from three-point range. Last Saturday against Providence, Riley recorded a career-high 11 rebounds.
WEARING-RED: Three members of the 1998-99 Villanova team will redshirt this season. Megan Stewart, a junior from Maroochydore, Australia, will travel to Germany during the second semester to study and master a second language. She will have two years of eligibility remaining when she returns to action next season. Both freshmen on the roster, Nicole Druckenmiller and Daniela Schroeder, are redshirting the 1998-99 season. Druckenmiller is the younger sister of San Francisco 49er quarterback Jim Druckenmiller.
BACK TO-ACTION: Last season, three Villanova Wildcats redshirted the 1997-98 season. All three, including Lauren Pellicane, Stephanie Baker and Therese Pennefather are currently on the 1998-99 active roster. Pellicane, a redshirt sophomore, is currently the teams starting two-guard and is averaging 9.5 ppg., 2.1 rpg and 2.8 apg. She also has made a team-best 32 three-point field goals. Baker, a redshirt freshman, came to Villanova with some lofty credentials after being named to the 1997 Parade Magazine All-American third team. She is currently averaging 4.6 ppg., and 3.9 rpg. in 13.1 mpg. Pennefather, also a redshirt freshman, will help add depth in the Villanova backcourt.
CAPTAINS: The Wildcats will have tri-captains this year as seniors Shannon Ferretti, Jenn Sliwa and Shanette Lee will serve this role for head coach Harry Perretta and the Wildcats.
