Villanova Perfect at ECAC Cape Cod Tournament

On Sunday, Sept. 12, in the second day of the ECAC Cape Cod Tournament at Dennis Yarmouth High School in Cape Cod, the Villanova University women's soccer team remained perfect on the season by defeating Northeastern 2-0. With the victory, the Wildcats' record improves to 5-0-0 overall on the season. In their first game of the ECAC Cape Cod Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 11, the 'Cats defeated Brown University 3-1.

Sunday's game went into the half scoreless, as both team's defenses held the opposing offense in check during the first 45 minutes. At the 54.27 mark of the second half, freshman Stephanie Martell (Wyomissing, Pa./ Wyomissing Area) scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from fellow freshman Kristin Dunst (Marlton, N.J./ Cherokee). Just two minutes later, Dunst scored a goal of her own, taking a Kathy Minnich pass and beating Husky goalie Rachelle Parkinson. Wildcat sophomore goalkeeper Janel Schillig and the Villanova defense held Northeastern in check down the stretch as they went on for the 2-0 victory.

Schillig and fellow sophomore goalie Susan Lubbers combined for the shutout. Schillig saved eight shots and held the Huskies scoreless in 83 minutes, before being relieved by Lubbers.

Taking the loss in goal for Northeastern (2-2) was Parkinson, who saved a game-high 15 shots.

The Wildcats will resume play on Friday, Sept. 17, as they travel to James Madison University for the Sheraton Four Points Classic. Villanova will play Richmond on Friday, at 5:00 p.m., and will have a day off before playing tournament host James Madison on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 2:00 p.m.
