Sept. 22, 1999
Philadelphia, Pa. --- The Villanova University men's soccer team traveled into Philadelphia today to take on Philadelphia Soccer Seven rival Temple University. After a grueling and hard-fought contest, the visiting Wildcats ousted the Owls 4-3 in double overtime. With the victory, the 'Cats upped their 1999 record to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in the Soccer Seven.
Down 2-0, Villanova staged a great comeback. Wildcat junior co-captain Joe Noonan (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) got the visitors on the board with his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Villanova's junior defender Jim Curtin (Oreland, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) then took a penalty shot and booted it right into the back of the net to knot the game at 2-2. Curtin's goal marked the second straight game that he has scored a goal. Temple came back to take a 3-2 lead in the second half, but 'Nova freshman Liam Murphy (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) then netted the first goal of his young career off of a pass from senior forward Dave Francalangia (Berlin, Conn./Berlin).
Regulation came to a close with both teams tied at 3-3, and into overtime they went. The first extra period ended scoreless, forcing the game into a second overtime. Just four minutes into the second overtime, Francalangia scored the game-winning goal. The game-winner capped a huge day for Francalangia, as he tallied two assists to go along with his big score.
Freshman goalkeeper Sean Teesdale (Blue Bell, Pa./La Salle) got his first career start in net for the 'Cats and received credit for the win.
The Wildcats' next game will be at Rutgers University on Saturday, September 25, at 7:00 p.m.
